Say, can you explain the difference between visible solar energy of the type the earth absorbs and IR energy that it emits and why CO2 and other GHG's absorb the latter more than the former. I'm assuming the wavelength difference between solar energy and IR (400 - 700 nm and 700 to 1000 nm respectively, if I'm not mistaken) but if solar energy has a composition that includes the IR wavelength then how can it pass so easily through GHG's on its way into the atmosphere?

I have approached admin about this before and they stated that science stuff should go in here. I personally think a seperate science, technology and environment board would be great.
Short answer - the energy from IR is absorbed by the bonds in CO2 and other GHG's. Bonds between atoms can only absorb energy in certain set amounts which allow the bonds to move to a higher energy state. The bonds of molecules can only exist in certain vibrational states, and can therefore only absorb photons of certain energies; i.e. vibrational states in bonding are a quantum phenomenon. The differences in energies between the vibrational states correspond mainly to the IR region of the spectrum.
The process is similar to a more familiar one - electrons absorbing energy from photons in the UV-Visible-IR region of the spectrum to move to higher energy states (i.e. electron shells), although in this case the energy 'gap' between the quantum vibrational states of bonds is less than that of electron shells. Hence, the absorption occurs in the lower frequency/energy IR region of the spectrum.
Is that a short answer? I guess so.....

As short as it's goin g to get I figure! Riiiight, I think I've got a grasp on the concept now. Fascinating stuff, I got into a discussion about global warming (surprise, surprise!) and somebody asked me that question and the best I could offer is the sketchy explanation I described above. IT's always nice to know a bit more about the mechanics that casue these things to happen. Thanks for that!

Are you for real? Carbon dioxide absorbs infrared radiation (heat). BP was interested in why this happens, now he's got a better idea. What possible problem could you have with this?

Can you please point out the reference to GW in my response???? It was purely related to the question asked, and not once did it have any political connotations.
FWIW, the main use of IR absorption in organic molecules is in IR spectroscopy, which is used to identify whether or not certain bond types are present in unknown organic compounds.
I'm almost ashamed to be a Geelong supporter with numbnuts like you and KC07 around.....
