Guys,

Quick chat on Thommo. Danger said he was not injured last night on the couch.

This means the following. He needs to drop weight and do more fitness in the pre season.

If Thommo can drop 5kg's and become 10% fitter, he will be able to make it to every contest and impact the inside just as well.

Sando & Danger both have said he can't make the constant contests now that they throw the ball up. This in my oppinion is because he is too bulky and not quite fit enough. The adding up over time of that extra weight and lack of fitness = a 2/3 quarter player.

Discuss.

If he is not carrying an injury it's time to wave him goodbye. Check out the vision of him after the bulldogs game where Mitch Wallis is being interviewed. Thommo is in the back ground and can barely walk. If he does'nt have groin problems it's all over for him at AFL level in the midfield. Can't run and chase or spread. He has become a liability at stopages.

a other possible reason his the game has passed him and he needs to adjust the way he plays bit like Porplyzia has to do over the summer.

Players always say "nah he's not injured"..
After not wanting to say anything initially, Sando has admitted he has hip and groin problems.. Danger probably is not even aware of this and would have thought he's doing the right thing by Thommo and the club by not putting his injury out there, or making excuses..

Hopefully he can get his body right but he will be 31 next year.. The best of the beast is in the past now..

If not injured then he's a liability. He's been great for us until this year. He gets a choice, retire, trade or delist. He's not part of our successful future. G'day Nathan, thanks for coming in, can you let Brent know we're free on your way out. G'day Brent, thanks for coming in, can you let David know we're free on the way out.

Did a great job for us in our lean years but we have such an abundance of inside mids now and he just looks so slow and clumsy. People were running past him in the corridor like he was walking on the weekend, it wasn't pretty. If he isn't injured its time for the fork. We have rising mids that need that spot.

Give him a new training program. If he is struggling getting to contests then its simple, get fitter. Drop a few kilos and do a shitload of running.

Besides Bernie, he was our best mid on the weekend, so he still has a spot in our side. He really needs to get goalkicking back into his game (what has happened to that?), and needs to do more defensively. He can stick tackles (probably the best at it in our side), but still gives away clumsy free kicks, can't see that improving though.

The one weapon he still has is his clearance work, so hopefully that doesn't diminish anytime soon.

Yeah he was great in the last quarter on Sunday and how was his effort against Port in the recent showdown. Get you rose coloured glasses off. He has been worse than poor for most of the back half of this season. The two times we have managed to come back and win games of late is when we have subbed him off. Sando should of made the tough call on him weeks ago but lacks the guts to drop one of the gold pass brigade. Why do we insist on giving games to guys because of previous performances of last year. This has been a huge contributing factor to our shitness this year.

Well that would make sense. I know Sando said a few weeks ago he thought Reilly was too big and struggling with the demands of the game, maybe the exact same logic is being applied to Thommo. It could explain Thommo's poor everything, the guy is just to fatigued to concentrate. According to footy wire he is 12cm taller than me and weighs 87kg only 2kg less and I am not a fitness fanatic. I think his age no longer allows him to get away with carrying so much bulk now. Id aim to get him down 82-83kg by end of pre season. I bet that alone would make a world of difference. Thommo is a fitness fanatic just too bulky.

He's injured.

Even before Danger was On The Couch, not many seemed to listen to this..
It's like people want to ignore it.. He's injured, he's broken.. Some of the times I've seen players go around him, once they wrong foot him you can see the resignation in him that his body is not letting him get even close to stopping that..

Groin problems ruin your power and flexibility.. He also has something wrong with his hip, I'm surprised he's played to the level he has.. Really, he should have been rested..

Sando has big plans for this coming preseason, I'd imagine players like Thommo will have been given specific consideration. The guy is either injured or exhausted - either way, you can be sure he'll come back better next year. Thommo is needed.

He's either injured or feeling the effects of age. One is curable, the other isn't.

Would like to see him stay out of the weights room all summer. Bit leaner, modified program.

I'm a bit worried that he's offered so little when playing forward though. Seems to be a centre square mid or nothing. No career-extending second string to the bow.

If his groins are shot though, playing him forward isn't going to cover for that - his acceleration, speed and lateral movement are clearly restricted as present; he's not excessively tall, so what weapons does he have to make him a potent option down forward?

He can't breakaway from his opponent to mark on the lead.
He can't move laterally to lose his opponent.
He can't run his opponent into the ground.

I love Thommo as much as anybody on this board, and I'm completely confident he'll be back near his best next year - but he should've been dropped a long time ago; but at least his dropping would be due to injury, not just him being shit.

I realistically don't see him getting any better, I have heard that he is going to retire at the end of the year, his body is shot and isn't recovering from week to week. I guess that is what happens when you play like a battering ram for 10+ years, a real shame in comparison to last year
