probably the wrong time to be posting, given todays team effort, but its something i've been thinking about all year.

i love him. always will. but is he starting to get towards the end of his career? does he need less time in the middle and more in the forward line so we can get another 2-3 years out of him? im a bit worried about all the cheap frees he gives away too.

thoughts?

or am i being reactionary to todays game too much?

You're not being too reactionary - it's not just today. His past few weeks have been very poor.

More phantom handballs to nowhere. He just looked so slow and ambling compared to the likes of Hanners, Kennedy and Jack.

He's injured and shouldn't have played this week just based on last week's knock. However he is also carrying a groin injury since basically the start of the year.

Had a TERRIBLE year.

Well, if he is carrying a groin injury, he should be rested now until it's right. Season's done. No point in making him play injured and, if age is catching up with him (and it almost always hits suddenly) we need to see what he's like injury-free to assess whether he's done.

Has had a very poor year. He's always been dodgy with his disposal and frustrating with his dopey frees-against but his ball-winning ability more than balanced the ledger. Not now. Not by a long shot.

Sydney are doing that to everyone though atm.

As good player as he is, I doubt he is the type of player who could effectively make the transition into a forward or defender like other aging midfielders have.

Played alright as a half forward rotating through the midfield earlier in his career, but I fear you may be right, we've given him a bit of time up forward this year and he's been less than impressive in the role. Plus he's a decidedly average shot on goal, especially in play, where he regularly sprays them out on the full.

Certainly looks well off his usual high standards and if its injury related then we should be resting him. When players get to his age it gets harder and harder to play through injuries as Ben Hart found out. Better off getting it right now, rather than causing a more chronic problem that prematurely ends his career.

Looks very slow this year. With out looking I would suspect he would be the leading candidate for Frees against and probably has close to the worst disposal efficiency. He is also not a goal kicker and often misses gimmes.

When you add it all up, it is not pretty.

The games gone past him now.
He's done.
Unfortunately he doesn't have the flexiblility to play any other position, like up forward.
He has carried the club for years but not anymore

Some of the comments remind me of the "Rutten is gone, should have retired last year" stuff that has been around for years now.. Might not get back to being as good as he has been but is in no way done and gone..

I know he has not been as effective as in past years but let's see, leading in average disposals in the team with 26 per game, 2 above the next player.. Just behind Danger for contested possession with 12.5, he's actually leading us for uncontested possession (13.5) which is a surprise, disposal efficiency is 66% which is about typical for him, Sloane as an example is 67%..

He's the leading clearance winner with 5.5, as a midfielder he is 3rd in rebound 50's only to Brodie Smith and Brent Reilly - which you would expect given that's their job.. Leading tackler in the team on 4.5 and 2nd in inside 50's to Douglas..

Yep, we would be far better off with Thommo gone..

Thommo's always at the bottom of the pack - always - sure he has been down on form this year, but so has almost everybody. If he is injured, rest him, if not, persist. He is one of our best players.

Done? No way.

Does his role have to change slightly? Yes.

I was going to start a thread just like this. I think he has to spend more time forward and we need to start getting games into our new midfield group. Smith, Lyons and Crouch all need to spend as much time in the middle a they can until the end of the year. We've got Dangerfield, Sloane, Douglas and Vince to provide the grunt. We've still got Wright fighting for a spot as well. We need to stop relying on him like we have for the past few seasons.

Thommo still has a vital part to play in our side.
