In his column in The Sunday Age, Craig Hutchison said the Assistant Coach and Football Director appointments are likely to be announced this week. He speculates that Peter German will get the A.C job and Neil Balme the F.D job. Being a Cat fan I guess he has some contacts, but we'll see. Balme has resigned from his Magpie position.

He also said the only player not to have re-signed for 2007 is Nathan Ablett. And the reason Paul Chapman didn't go to London was that he hates flying. Does that make him a scaredy cat. Joking 'chapmanmagic35', he's one of my fav's.

I'd hold some queries over both appointments, if true.

I don't claim to have any inside knowledge of how he operates, but if general impressions are worth something, Balme has never blown me away the numerous times I've heard him. Doesn't exactly come across as a man I'd want running my club.

Likewise, I don't know all too much about German and the man's approach to the game as a coach, but if second hand opinion counts for something, he (apparently) isn't the tactically astute man I'd be looking for. Given the tactical prowess of our current department, it's not an appointment that would thrill me. Maybe that has more to do with the "sit on our hands" approach by the club to date than anything else though.

Good cop, bad cop approach at Geelong?

It's not much good if they are both rubbish tacticians, we know one is already, but hey if he pulls a few of the self absorbed players into line it will be an upgrade on what we already have and let's face it we don't have a large field to pick from.

My inderstanding was that Balme was told his services were no longer required at Collingwood. But since we are unlikely to get anyone better he isn't a bad choice. Peter German comes with a great record and will make a terrific edition to the team IMO.

Apparently Balme resigned. But he could see the writing on the wall when the guy from the Kangaroos was appointed to a new position which incorporated many of his duties. He'd be a mile better than Thomas who is a control freak.

Wouldn't be too worried about Nathan. Apparently he has no manager and Nathan being Nathan just hasn't got around to contract negotiations. There was a quote from Bomber in the piece which said "We are confident he will sign, he's come along way and he's told us he does want to play on"

I think Peter German has a reasonably good coaching record. Besides there isn't much left to choose from. If only Vossy was available.

Don't want Grant Thomas anywhere near the club. Administration or anything else.

Yikes - Peter Rohde, the man without the midas touch, is in the mix as well for the directors job. Not really that keen about Balme either, has made a couple of mistakes at Collingwood leading to pubic ticking offs. We should trty and poach Andrew Ireland or someone of that calibre.

The number of times I've heard Balme questioned about Collingwood football matters, to receive the reply "not to my knowledge" or "first I've heard about it" was unbelievable. In my opinion nothing but a Malthouse/McGuire yes man. Wouldn't want him anywhere near the club. German I honestly don't know.

Are Gary Davidson, Phillip Walsh and Steven Hocking in the running for the footy managers job.

Walsh has accepted a new role at Port.

Where did the Grant Thomas suggestion come from? He has made scathing remarks about GFC in the past and has said (on SEN) that he is not interested in any other club. Take him at his word. He is a thoroughly unpleasant person except to his chosen few - waiting in the wings for Butterss to fall over - or for a chance to trip him up. Why on earth would we consider him?

why on earth would geelong consider rhode... for mine it should be Steven Hocking then Neil Balme.

I'd really like them to set their sights high and go for someone with a record of achievement. As they did in getting Cook. Ireland, Clayton, Allan are three that come to mind. You may be unsuccessful but it's the way the top corporates go - they head hunt. If all the footy executive has done is advertise and pick the best of those that have applied, I'd be disappointed.

If Steve Hocking gets it, doesn't it mean we've just shifted the deck chairs? The only fresh blood would be a new Assistant Coach.
