Premier : Richmond - brave to tip against them at the moment
Runner up: Port Adelaide - probably the best overall balance to their team last year - Fantasia and Alir terrific pick ups and it seems their younger brigade just gets better
Spoon: North (I think Adelaide had a good finish to last season and seemed to find some form. North were putrid for much of last year)
Saints ladder position: 7th (same as last year but this time the Doggies host us - won't matter though coz it will be at the G anyway!)

Coleman Medal: Dixon - the time has come for the big man! Started like a freight train last year and if he can keep fit and keep in form - well...
Brownlow Medal: **** it - it's about time we had another one of these - 23 year drought is long enough, Steele to absolutely dominate.
Norm Smith medal: Martin just goes up a level come finals. So gotta be him!
Trevor Barker Medal: Brad Crouch

Saints Leading goal kicker: Members (just quietly goes about his business while Maxy takes the double team and gets the ball to ground for everyone else to pounce on it.
Saints highest brownlow voter: Steele obviously.
Saints picked in the AA squad: Crouch, Hill, Clark, Coffield,

Ladder :
1. Richmond - the more things change, the more they stay the same...
2 Port - back up there once again and another nice draw will see them in form
3. Brisbane - another really balanced side but
4. West Coast - Probably way off with this but I need to shake up the top four and I can't see anyone else knocking them out. The gap between best and worst is more evident this year.
5. Geelong - Petered out last year and found some form in the finals I guess but honestly I think the longer season is going to be a hindrance for them. We'll see...
6. Bulldogs - Could and should finish top four but I have to have my typical "bulldogs gunna fail" glasses on - we beat them in the first final btw ;)
7. St Kilda - with our draw and injuries I can actually see us missing the eight BUT I think we've got the men to cover our losses and will be quite suprised with the turnout we get from our recruits. If Paddy and Marshall stay fit we're a good shot but if not, having Macca and Hunter is not a bad combo as a back up. Competition for spots will be fierce too so we should get some really desperate performances.
8. Carlton - Great draw, great pick ups in trade week/draft and as usual will have their fans baying about how good they are all year - will sneak in more as an indictment of the teams around them.
9. Fremantle - WIll challenge but will fall at the final hurdle. Good young side on it's way to finals.
10. Gold Coast - worry not gold coast, your first finals appearance is not far off -
11. GWS - continue to slip after the mass exodus last year. Might even be further but still too much talent to fall to the bottom four-six.
12. Sydney - Sneaks out of the bottom six with a solid list that will just get better. No finals yet though.
13. Collingwood - You want to talk about a mass exodus??? A shadow of the side that played in the grannie in 2018. Great pick ups in the draft will help their cause a little but forget about finals. Might finish a bit higher if the teams above them spud it up.
14. Melbourne - the disappointment of the year for mine - will drop significantly after a mixture of injuries and a tough draw.
15. Hawthorn - Can't see them improving much this year.
16. Essendon - Not as bad as I first thought - their youngsters look terrific but unfortunately they will tire out and probably have a similar second half as they did this year.
17. Adelaide -Climb up one spot to 17th by virtue of North being slightly worse than them - four or five wins max
18. North - Basketcase. Will win four or less games and for ****'s sake can one of them please not be against us for once!!!!

Hero of 2021: Brad Crouch - not just for what he brings to the team but also for bringing Hill back into the game and vindicating both decisions by the club!
Villan of 2021: Injury - it already is and will continue to be - for us, for other teams...

Ladder post finals:
(P) Geelong (so hungry, one of the best systems, potent all over, unbeatable when on. BUT: Can they avoid the psychological effect of choking?)

(GF) Port Adelaide (will suck the life out of teams with the forward pressure and their young forwards are deadly. BUT: do they have enough up front to take the final step?)

(PF) Richmond (not as hungry anymore, lose a couple of vital matches and bow out early from finals. BUT: Can their system and muscle memory keep them winning all the way to the end?)

(PF) St Kilda (stronger belief, better use of Hill, more clearances, less inconsistency. BUT: Have other teams worked out how to shut down their close to goal free scoring?)

(SF) Brisbane (less home advantage plus not convinced by their trading, any improvement comes from their kids. BUT: Can another year of finals experience harden them to improve when it counts?)

(SF) Western (a lot stronger but still a spine too weak to beat the best. BUT: They only just scraped into the 8 in 2020, will Treloar make that much difference when the Bulldogs' midfield was already their better area by far?)

(EF) Melbourne (still flakey but with quality down back in the middle and now up front, they'll win more of the close ones. BUT: Will their coaching let them down again?)

(EF) West Coast (injuries continue to cruel them. BUT: If they keep their guns on the field, who can stop them?)

------------------------

Fremantle (most promising young coach in the league, several excellent young talents and one of the elite players of the comp, they'll keep rising. BUT: are their young players ready for the next step up?)

Gold Coast (so much elite talent, if Rowell & stars stay on the park, expect to be more competitive. BUT: see Fremantle)

Carlton (strengthened on key areas but still a squad with many holes. BUT: If their young mids and forwards can help Cripps out more, how far can they go?)

GWS (they will continue to take a step backwards with further player turnover, and doubts remain about their coaching. BUT: Have they got enough character to avoid bottoming out?)

Sydney (Hickey won't make much difference, their style doesn't suit modern footy. BUT: does their sheer quality of their players returning from injury and indeed all over the field and in the box give them something more?)

Collingwood (they were looking wobbly before their catastrophic trade period, awesome draft haul too young to have immediate impact. BUT: Can JDG put the club on his back as he's done so often, AND can CFC forge an "us against the world" spirit that galvanises the team successfully?)

North (Stephenson has the potential to light them up and their youngsters look very promising, but it starts now. BUT: Will their next coach have what it takes to right the ship?)

Adelaide (while the PTSD in their squad remains progress is negligible, but they've got a nice little squad to kick off the rebuild. BUT: Will the youth wait for the establishment to just hand them control of the team?)

Essendon (mass coaching buy out from key players burned their 2020 season and will require a reset before progress. BUT: Will their star-studded midfield be able to make up for the club's other considerable shortcomings?)

Hawthorn (they were feeble this year: what's changed? BUT: Does master coach Clarko have one more trick up his sleeve?)

Coleman Medal: Cameron
Brownlow Medal: Petracca
Brownlow 2nd-5th place: Neale, Rowell, Dangerfield, Steele
Norm Smith medal: Dangerfield

Trevor Barker Medal: Steele
Saints Leadership group: Steele (c), Billings, Howard, Membrey
Saints Leading goal kicker: Butler
Saints highest brownlow voter: Steele
Saints picked in the AA squad: Butler (FP), Howard (FB), Coffield (HBF), Clark (interchange)

Rising Saints: Bytel, Byrnes, Connolly, Battle, Hill, Dunstan,
Falling Saints: King (just 2nd year blues), Carlisle, Geary, Ross
Departing Saints: Geary, Roberton, Carlisle, Lonie, Ross, Webster, Dunstan, Allison (steak knives in trade for B. King)

Hero of 2021: Justin Longmuir, Ben Brown, Christian Petracca, Patrick Dangerfield, Retiring Commentator Bruce MacAvaney,
Saints hero of 2021: Paddy Ryder, Tom Highmore, Hunter Clark, Ben Paton, Jarryd Roughead, Matt Finnis
Villain of 2021: Sacked coaches Leon Cameron, Simon Goodwin, countless players who flaunt the Hub rules, whichever state premier decides to put his citizens' safety ahead of their freedom by locking their state down and pushing footy out, Dimma, Buckley
Saints villain of 2021: Long (multiple suspensions), Lonie (great late form and trade request), Lethlean (poached by Collingwood/Essendon) Higgins, (takes a while to get going, inconsistent), Crouch (less impact than hoped)

Overall summary: Saints will consolidate in a year where many competitors will strengthen, another compromised year in an interstate hub will be harder this time round, the tough draw will take its toll on the players' morale but the coaching team will keep the right players on an even keel. 2021 will see the start of massive flux where we will do well to hold on to our hats and keep pressing through. Our premiership clock is at about 8:30.

A bit pessimistic I guess, but I'm sure I'll cheer up the closer we get to the season's start!
It seems Tom Morris is in furious agreement with me regarding the top 8. That probably means we are both going to look stupid at the end of the season!
