Broadford 7 out 9 in. Not sure how they would field a side if they couldn't last year?

YG 16 out 12 in?

3 guys have moved (Armstrong, Wood and Evans), otherwise of that list only 4 (Godfrey, Ekers, Capuano and Dodsworth) have played much footy over the past couple of years eg last game Bryce Muurling played was the 2017 grand final and I can't remember the last time Ozzy pulled on the boots.

Any thoughts on the issue if low numbers across the league. Hearing many clubs are struggling with numbers and Under 19’s are in big trouble across all Divisions.

Can it be turned around or are we looking at a few more clubs going into recess.

100%, over the coming weeks we will see clubs fold, merge ect. I know of at least 2 VAFA clubs fold or go to clubbies.

To many sides with too high a demand for players that just isn’t there

Basically without juniors how many clubs are viable? Or are they just leaching off the big clubs.

It’s insane how many blokes play 1-2 games of premier football and next second have a $200-$400 offer from bottom division clubs. It’s just not sustainable for anyone.

We had about 10 clubs over the summer just gone go into recess (many won't come back) and you can expect that number to be around 20-25 next off-season.

Maryborough Rovers and Royal Park are talking merger publicly and I dare say one or two more sets of clubs are currently discussing a union under the cone of silence.

The Golden Rivers and Upper Murray leagues are expected to be disbanded at the end of this season or else next season.

There also needs to be sweeping changes in the Maryborough-Castlemaine region as there are not enough players to go around all of the clubs and a few clubs are really doing it tough. At least Rovers and Royal Park are being realistic and can see the benefits of a merger.

The clubs more than two hours out of Melbourne will find the going tougher with less travelling players unless they are prepared to pay exorbitant match payments to players who aren't of the quality to deserve the cash. These clubs need the travellers to fill their teams so they will pay them.

I am sure that Outer East clubs are not totally immune to the situation, but having access to the eastern suburbs catchment puts OE clubs in a better predicament than say clubs in the North Central or Mininera leagues.

Might be a good thing for juniors. Clubs may realise they need to put wirk into them.

OE definitely not on their pat malone.

AFL reports still show national overall increases in particpation but includes womens, masters, disability etc as well as school programs.
Conveniently (for them) they have no obvious document that isolates male participation in open age competitions.

Gembrook v emerald at gembrook tomorrow night.

430 reserves
630 seniors

Live music during breaks from the balcony and in the bar after the seniors.

Would have to be, not a good sign. Unbelievable how many clubs have fallen over this off season
Not just an issue in Outer East. Sadly many clubs are suffering post COVID and living costs are really having an impact on player numbers Due to the need to work to make ends meet. On a positive note some clubs like Yarra Glen will be ok for the year despite having some player number issues with a few guys returning to the club. There are a number of clubs in the Eastern FNL hanging on by a thread so I’m told. Only time will tell who are the next clubs to fall over.

Get back to 18’s would be a great start.

You keep repeating this ad nauseum like it will magically boost senior participation numbers by the 100s (if not 1000s) that would be needed to sustain current senior clubs (both locally and interstate).
Given most leagues moved to U19s in the first place due to not having enough U18s (plus retaining some players who would otherwise quit when they got to senior level for another year) I just don't see it being a fix whatsoever.

It's a cyclical thing. We come across the issue every few years.

If enough clubs are worried, bring the issue up at a meeting and have a vote on 18s or 19s, then move on because you will find that 19s will most likely win out.

As Noodles Magee said, the issue is player numbers. I reckon that we will get to a point in the next few years where reserves football becomes non-compulsory in order to keep clubs operating as they struggle to get even 35-40 senior players.

Won’t happen in the short term, but an open age 1st, 2nds and 3rds comp would be ideal imo. Maybe more of a country thing than a metro thing.

Your actually developing kids would play in the 2’s while the blokes who don’t like training and just want a kick can have a run in the 3rds similar to the clubbies setup in VAFA.

2s football has become a waste of time. How many clubs are just playing blokes for the sake of it who don’t train, don’t care and just chuck the jumper on to help the club.

This still requires the same number of registered participants as an U18/19, reserves and seniors system.
Realistically this would need a good 80 (or more) players on a club's list. Given the likes of Yea etc couldn't even get a 1/3rd of that I'm skeptical your proposal would be any better than what we have now.

Outside of the VAFA, I cannot really see this happen. I read today that a fair number of Eastern clubs are expected to struggle with fielding two teams consistently this season, so three would be out of the question for many.

It may only happen in the GVL or O&M if there was a rationalisation of clubs in their respective regions.

In those areas, the talk is more towards having seniors and under 23s at GVL level while the other players would play at their aligned KDL club (MOU's between GVL & KDL clubs). In a similar vein, the O&MFNL clubs would have MOU links with either Tallangatta or Ovens & King clubs.

We would need to have a severe rationalisation of clubs in order to have leagues operating with a majority of clubs fielding three open-age teams.

I suppose what I failed to mention is clubs wouldn’t have a mandatory 3rds side.. just an option. The culture would shift that kids want to finish juniors and play in the 2s… while social footballers play in 3rds.

Clubs without 19s would just field 2 sides as normal.
