In another thread, the question was posed:

Other than Robran, who do you think was the best South Australian to never play VFL?

This could turn into a good argument :D

In my own biased opinion, Peter Carey. Gave huge service to Glenelg and SA. Rarely beaten as ruckman, even towards the end of his career. Was the only ruckman in SA who could get on top of the Roosters' Redden-Parsons combo in the mid-80s.

Plenty other players would rate a mention. Garry McIntosh and Michael Aish come to mind. Ken Farmer never played with a Vic club did he? Or Bob Hank? Freddy Bills? Now that I think about it, plenty of players pre-'70s would qualify, since players tended to stay in SA prior to the modern era.

Paul Bagshaw, Rick Schoff, Brenton Adco ck, Eddie Fry, nah forget eddie 8-)

Unbiased ;) nominations for me would be....

Tom Leahy - If you can believe what you read the best ruckman in the country prior to WW1 (see avatar)

Ken Farmer - Considering his record in state games on Regan (the best VFL fullback of the 30's)

Ian Mc Kay - Considering his record in state games on Coleman.

Two of the above three aren't in the Hall of Fame....hmmm

Neil Kerley never played in the VFL, did he? Neither did John Cahill?

How many seasons did Russell Ebert play for North Melbourne? He was a superstar in the SANFL and had a brief stint in the VFL but was never able to play his best footy outside his home state, very much like Bomber Peake from the Sharks.

Unlike the Sandgropers, staying in SA was the rule not the exception for our champions. ;)

But in keeping with the tone of this thread... Dan Moriarty, Jim Deane and Peter Darley.

As a matter of interest Dave, Jim Deane spent a couple of seasons at Richmond, and did alright.

Thinking (writing) out loud here some potentials would be.....

Central District - Barry Norsworthy, Beythein,
Glenelg - Marker, Carey, Eustice*
North Adelaide - Leahy, McKay, Farmer,
Norwood - Scott, Aish, Wedding,
Port Adelaide - John Cahill, Reval, Quinn,
Sturt - Bagshaw, Schoff, Adco ck,
South Adelaide - Moriarty, Darley, Laurie Cahill
West Adelaide - McGregor, Kerley, Head
West Torrens - Bob Hank, Head, Tom McKenzie
Woodville - Simunsen
(NB:Any Woodville player who could 1/2 play ended up in Victoria:D )

(* Central and West can claim him as well)

Oh he did? Must've been one of few from that era.

I can't think of any others of the top of my head. It also isn't widely known or indeed acknowledged in most circles.

1954-1955 ; 33 Games ; 17 Goals

So he went the year after winning a MM and then returned and was runner up on countback a year later in 57(later awarded retropectively).

Bernie Smith, Geelong's 1951 Brownlow medalist, originally started with West Adelaide.

Interesting, so it was in the prime of his career.

I believe the expression is............oh der (how embarassing).

Interesting, so it was in the prime of his career.

Yeah apparently he was quite good with Richmond and they were keen to keep him but he wanted to return to SA.

Leaping!

You forgot Garry..........

And we all know he would have made it, while I loved it when he decided to stay at The Parade, the rest of the country never got to see just how good he was, forget Jarman, Forget Williams, Macca was THE best exponent of the Handball in close or over a distance, he could also hit someone on the **** as well with his kicking............. you dont win as many Fos Williams's as he did without being able to play...............

Pure oversight Davo. I was trying to think of 3 from most clubs and they were the first three Norwood players I thought of. Hey - I've had the 'flu :D
The thing I always thought was not just his skill but his build would have made McIntosh a star in the VFL/AFL.

I'm going to plump for Bob Hank.

Closely followed by David "Sally" Saywell, Bob "Jungles" Ford and Geoff "Banger" Baynes.
