SYDNEY SWANS
Goal Kickers: H Grundy 6; K Thornton 6; S Phillips 4; L Brennan 3; M Laidlaw 2; T Schmidt 2; L Vogels 2; A Walker 1; J Moore 1; J Dawes 1; J Crouch 1;
Best Players: K Thornton; R Babazon; J Moore; T Schmidt; J Crouch; K Jack;

So our best 6 would be the ones who are most likely pushing for selection. I think it's about time we gave either Thornton or Brabazon a crack.

Probably this isn't the week to be suggesting that, given there's no-one who played seniors today who you'd deem droppable - even McVeigh outweighed his errors with some pretty useful stuff.

Didn't actually think the reserves were that impressive today. They made quite a lot of silly errors that suggested some of their brains weren't completely switched on. Thornton and Brabazon were lively when their turn came, Phillips did what Phillips does pretty much every week, and Grundy was far far too good one-out for his opponent.

Here is the Wildcats' result for this round where they, the last placed team, played the second last placed team on the ladder:

Tuggeranong Hawks 20.22 -142 defeated Canberra Wildcats 5.4 - 34

Here is our result today against the middle ranked team:

Sydney Swans 29.21 – 195 defeated Ainslie 5.5 - 35.

I don't know how it can be done, but we need to come to some arrangement with the Wildcats and AFL Canberra to split our Reserves side with theirs to some extent. The discrepancies in results and standards are too great; for the good of the AFL Canberra and for the adequate preparation of our players for senior AFL. If we get injuries or need to run players into form I don't believe the standard of the matches will adequately prepare our players who are required to step up, in adequate time. These are not genuine 'match conditions', these type of results are training drills. And with these sought of results they will need to find match fitness in the seniors and that won't work over the long, hard season ahead. The least we can do is try to arrange for a genuine, hard testing game each week for our Reserves, even if the standard isn't what we would want.

They did a split last year after the Weston Creek (the old name for the wildcats) agreed to forfeit the game. The league didn't like this arrangement and penalised the Reserves the 4 points. Still, considering the thrashing the Wildcats got from the Swans earlier this year, I think I'd prefer a split to occur and for us not to get the points.

Also, interesting to see Belconnen lost today to Eastlake.

Does anyone know how Ed Barlow is going? Will he ever play seniors and if so when?
I like his game. He's shown his versatility in recent weeks by playing up forward and shown he has an eye for goal. However, being on the rookie list and what seems like a logjam at the end of the year, I fear for his future.

Thornton and Brabazon have improved in the first part of this season and must be retained. I'm guessing Kieren Jack will earn a spot on the seniors, and the spots needed for new draftees will make it an interesting time come season's end. Doyle is most likely to make way I guess.

Not that its means much but why has oldmanpop got auskick down for 5

It is time to play 17... ie one man short on field for all game... have 5 on bench... until finals or Belconnen

For Wildcats and the likes....
.... Just play the midfield & backline & 2 forwards (14 on ground)
OR
.......have a keg and barbque sizzle any Swans Ressie who needs a top up just stroll off, plastic beer cups allowed onto ground!:D

I know it sounds like a crazy idea but,it would be great if some of our reserves
could be put out on loan to more competitive leagues. Eg,wafl safl or the Melbourne comp. The reason i came up with this crazy idea was based on the
fact that the top English Premier League clubs operate such a system, not sure how it works, would have to look into it more closely. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Yes (and there are already several threads discussing this idea).

My main thought is that the negatives would outweigh the positives. Opportunities for training with the host side would be non-existent unless the players partly relocated. And that itself would be an issue for training the squad as a whole. Those farmed out players would be treated as marginal by their host clubs, and it would be close to impossible for the coaches to watch all the juniors play and hence monitor their progress in match situations.

The only partly viable option would be to farm players out amongst the ACT clubs but I doubt the benefits of this would be that significant compared to the downside.

Aa variation on that has happened with the stipulation that there can't be more than 15 listed players on the ground at any time. The quality of the top ups is variable and you can see they're giving their all, but some of them are more of a handicap than an asset.

I was serious about 17 even if only 15 are listed... because ressies need to get used to the crowded flooding and double teaming/ blocking they will encounter in 1's... so what if Grundy or Vogels is double tagged it will sharpen up midfield's option taking and make forwards work harder... and make for a more even, worthwhile contest!.... and it should not effect Swans gameplan structure... or the result:o

There is no way, that if a opposition ACTAFL team which is down by 50-100pts at half time, that they will put in a solid effort in the last half... they are already thinking about the after game beer & watching the 1's

Did anyone see Crouch playing? Wondering if he's done enough to come back in for the annual Akker clash.

Corpuscles, having watched a fair few reserves game I don't think having 17 will make much difference, if any. I think in one of the reserves reports on RWO, the writer even suggested that there were players taken off during the last quarter. If you don't get the ball very often, having an extra man advantage won't help at all.

Also, I suspect the last quarter is shortened if the match runs too long as it will usually do when there are 35+ goals kicked in a game. The siren rang at 12.20 sharp on Sunday when only 24 minutes had elapsed.

Dunno, but based on size and muscle tone maybe..... Jenny Craigs son?

See suggested b'que comment... did some good things but thankfully no breeze!

Wasn't at the game, but sounds like Jacob Dawes.

A young kid from Newcastle under 16 last year.

Basketball convert only played a season at under 16 level.

Is very lean, but is tall and may have a future who knows.

This is where giving some talented juniors a run, might show some opportunities for the club's recruitment.

How's Craig Bird playing?

He's been playing with the NSW/ACT Rams in the TAC Cup. Got named in the best lists for both games. So did that Sri Lankan kid (sorry can't spell his name) who has been playing as a top up player.

It's interesting to see that Luke Brennan is starting to make an impact.

Given his age and background, his recruitment doesn't make any sense unless the Swans seriously expected him to play senior football this season. I reckon a couple more good performances in the reserves will really put pressure on the match committee to give him a go.

Is there any way he can get promoted to the senior list given how short our injury list is?
