Sesame or poppy?

Seriously though, I have been thinking lately we are missing a speedy outside mid. In honesty, besides kpp's if I could choose a player to fill the biggest hole in our team it would be Isaac smith. (not including a premier small forward as we already have krakouer).
Johnson is almost done and Thomas' inside game is worth too much to sacrifice him as purely outside... So I would like to see Seedsman be groomed in this role and he has the attributes to be like smith.

Agree/disagree? Probably could have gone in daves random thoughts thread but I want some good responses from good posters.

Cheers

Re: Seedsmans role

I don't think you should groom anyone for a purely outside role. Ideally you want all your mids to be able to get their hands dirty as well as spread and cause damage when in space. You sometimes get players who are so good at one aspect that they get away with being useless at another aspect, but you don't groom them that way; you try to overcome their weaknesses. Seedsman strikes me as a player who can develop into a solid allround midfielder.

The opportunity is there for Seedsman with all the injuries. He just needs to take his chances when they come and continue to improve.

Seedsman is not super quick in the way Isaac Smith is but Seedsman's ball use is good and has some toughness to his game for a skinny lad and is a willing tackler. He has the potential to grow into a role on the wing but still has some improving to go before he makes the position his on a perminant basis and probably needs another preseason to develop physically and continue to work on his endurance so that he can increase his numbers more. I have liked the signs up to this point and there is the chance he can make a career happen at AFL level with continued work.

Right now I see the immediate solution as Heath Shaw. I don't like Shaw down back without Leon Davis this year. Davis took so much pressure off Shaw and Shaw will get a forward tag every time he starts in the backline (which he has difficulty playing against) while on a wing he has more freedom and seems to be better exertising his influence on the contest which over the past 2 weeks has been huge for the team with him even hitting the scoreboard which has been fantastic to see.

For balance and to give the more potentcy and aggresive intent, we could benefit from a run and carry player who hits targets. At the moment Seedsman has the opportunity at his doortstep, when the likes of Thomas, perhaps Fasolo and in weeks to come, potentially Ugle/Williams return this may change. If he perform well he will stay
Re Shaw moving forward, a move i also am very much in favour, my concern is the lack of run and set up from the back half without him there particularly against quality sides. HIghlighted even further without Ben J. Can we rely and Harry and the captain to set up and hit targets?

Harry and Maxwell to hit targets...you cannot be serious. Every time they try to perform a penetrating kick it hangs in the air for minutes.

This. I think he's shown he can do it all. Just needs to get some senior game time. The Isaac Smith comparison is valid. Reminds me a bit of Bruce Abernethy.

So some for, some against. I know he is young and shouldnt get too many games this year, but I think it would be wise for Collingwood to either groom him to be this okayer over the next 1-2 years or draft someone like Smith.

Shaw is a good suggestion knight - he definitely fits the bill and we have been seeing his damage there at the moment.

So who comes in then?

Thomas, Tarrant, Dawes, Fasalo, Jolly all certainies above Seedsman.

Ugle, Rounds, Young all players I believe are ahead of him at the moment.

I think Seedsman will be a good player but he is not ready yet and rushed in dues to injuries. Time to develop as these guys come back in

Before it is said yes i know not all these players play the same role as him but as they come in peoples roles shuffle and move around within the team.

Got to admit, he's disappointing me just a tad so far.

But too soon to write him off based on what's been presented.

Not as outrageously terrible as Sinclair was to begin with, but then didn't really show much the other way either, so I'm kind of ambivalent on him.

You don't make it into the AFL whwn you're his size unless you have some clear attributes in regards to skill.

I think he quite clearly has some tricks in his toolbag, but he's just lacking that little bit of confidence at senior level to play his natural game.

He's a hell of a long way from being an AFL player at the moment. Back to the VFL this year, seen enough of him.

Perhaps if you watch the game again you may change your mind. Watching the game for the first time today, Seedsman was quite impressive. He got into good positions and used the ball well, sometimes spitting out lightning handballs or accurate kicks to teammates. I certainly did not get the impression that he was a hell of a long way from AFL footy.

Agree 100% here, i thought he showed a fair bit the other night and displayed some real class at times, keeps improving every time he steps out and for a 2nd year player is more than doing enough.

The negativity from some supporters is staggering to be honest regarding kids who have played barely 10 games, no patience and a "just add water" mentality.

There was a nice sidestep around someone followed by a nice pass it actually looked quite classy and not really something you would expect a 1st or 2nd year player to be attempting.I think he may well possess a few tricks and he does not always give off the first option,I think he actually he is a young player who has quite a bit of confidence in himself and time will tell whether or not it is justified.

As someone said he needs another pre season and 10kgs and then we can see what sort of role he can have but I will say I really like his quiet confidence in himself.

'Classy' is a key word with seedsman because he oozes class at times. It is hard to think of a reason why he will not be best 22 next year, because he looks like he belongs in the AFL.

Agree he does look like he Belongs in the AFL. Also Buckley seems a Fan.

Look at Sinclair(Yes I know this going against what I have said before) start of the season he was spraying everything and now he still does but not as bad as it has been. In Fact his last 2 Games his Finishing has really improved

Fully concur. Shown enough to warrant more exposure. Certainly hasn't been overwhelmed.

Not quite sure what people expect sometimes. Rare these days that a kid plays his first few games and really rips it up.

Watching a bit of the replay again, he has very quick hands and could hold his own in a tackle. He may be slight but he isn't as easy to take down as Sinclair. Obviously you want him to win his own ball, but I would appreciate an outside runner with pentrating footskills (which he has) to really glide through the midfield.

There are some clowns on this forum that wouldn't be able to identify a young AFL player with talent if we fielded a team of 17 year old Nathan Buckley's.

It doesn't matter how involved or perhaps uninvolved Seedsman is right now. He shows some really really good AFL level attributes. Particularly when it comes to awareness, and clean skills. To me he seems like a much more raw but more athletically gifted version of Sidebottom. Even shows some Pendlebury qualities in terms of smooth co-ordinated actions on the field, especially in traffic.

When it comes to kids starting out their careers, I'd much rather see someone whom only touches it 5 times but shows a number of AFL level qualities than a kid who gets it 15-20 times but has very few tricks. Seedsman is without question an AFL quality player and will most likely end up being a pretty good one.
