September 11 2001 - what do you remember?

I was also in year 10. I think the first I saw of it was on the Channel 10 news after Rove. Was the only thing discussed at school the next day. The weird things is that one of the people that died has the same name as me.

I was watching something on TV (can't remember what) and my fiance (now wife) was asleep in bed.

The news flash came on, and the world trade centre was smoking. Whilst they new a plane had hit the building, they didn't yet know it was a terrorist attack.

I thought about waking the missus up, but kept watching instead.

My jaw hit the floor in absolute disbelief as I watched the second plane hit live. In that instant I knew it was an attack, and so did the reporters. Moments of stunned silence followed.

At this point I woke the wife up. Rather angrily she says "what??" absolutely incensed that I had woken her up. I didn't know how to explain but responded with, "no, you REALLY need to see this".

The next few hours were a bit of a blur, what I do remember vividly was the pictures of people jumping out of the building as a last gasp instinct to escape the flames - brought me to tears that.

The next morning was the weirdest, most sedate I have ever seen Melbourne. Absolutely stunned.

I do remember thinking how badly I wanted the American military to go and flatten some far off nation in retaliation - so all you hindsight heroes who now say it was a bad idea to go in can cram it.

12 at the time.

I remember waking up and being annoyed that Cheez TV wasn't on, I loved Dragon Ball Z before school :(

I don't think it actually hit me until later in the day, but I remember the second tower falling and people throwing themselves from windows. Pretty messed up stuff.

Definitely a different world from that day forward.

exactly!

at that moment all you wanted was some kind of revenge!..seeing all those people running around like scared kids, crying, strangers bleeding and hugging...

at that moment revenge was the only option.

I guess the trouble was/is revenge wasnt swift..its been drawn out over 10 years. Peoples memories and views have softened.

Fighting a war that cant really be won isnt easy... all they are effectivley doing is killing rats in a sewer, who knows how many there are...... (unless all they want is a never ending war which keeps the war machine ticking and the money rolling in)

Like most others in the thread, aged 7, cheez tv, thought it was a movie, didn't know what the teachers at school were talking about etc. But over the last few years I have looked into and been intrigued about 9/11 and have watched quite a few videos on youtube to open my mind up to it as I had no idea at the time of its occurence.

Does anyone know if there will be a minute silence at the football on Sunday? I think it would be a great idea, just out of respect.

Guys, I recently got a talk from an Australian raised muslim about tolerance and diversity and she said she could not believe that a group of muslims had done this to people, she said that it is a part of the muslim way to never lay a finger on anyone, and that she isn't even allowed to kill spiders in her house as it is against her religion! She lived in Adelaide at the time and she was totally ostracised from the community, people would rev their parked cars at her, people would stair at her, people even spat at her, and she was an Australian, not a terrorist. You just have to remember, this terrible crime was committed by muslim extremists, and is not reflective of the community as a whole.

after the london bombings things were really highly strung for a while. We lived on a the rd of a famous mosque, the 'preacher' was nicknamed Dr Hook, he had a silver hook for a hand and had only one eye. He lost them in a bomb explosion. He and his supporters were banned from the mosque for one reason or another which all lead to the u.s trying to extradite him on terroisim charges.

When they were banned they started preaching on the street instead, they would all be sat on the road, wearing these cloaks and hoods while this guy preached from a megaphone.

I had to get home one day and i didnt want to walk through them so i ducked through a car park on the side, I got half way along and there were 3 guys ahead of me, all cloaked up with hoods on, all i could see were their eyes. I was panicking! i couldnt turn and go back, it would look worse..so i kept walking towards them... they were murmuring things..i'm panicking bad!

then as i get up to them i hear that they were just talking about arsenal and if henry was going to get a start that weekend.

I felt like such an idiot...i had tarred them all with the same brush - from then on i just relaxed and realised we are all the same ppl..there are just some extermists or D*&kheads in every walk of life. But they are in the minority.

i guess the guys who hit the twin towers were murderers first.....not muslims, or jews or christians.

but having said all this it would be hard not to feel anger and want revenge on the night the towers went down..it must be human nature.

All you can say is religion's keeping the world's population down - so it's therefore good for the environment I guess :p

Lack of education - meaning people follow along like a heard of sheep - and poverty is obviously the root of the problem and these people are consequentely easy pickings for the terroist networks in the Middle East.

What I can't comprehend is the people living in England, USA, maybe even Australia with the same beliefs. Then again the world has seen some crazy mass murderers.

I believe the Catholic's would have something to say on that ;).

I must have been 15 when the attack happened. I didn't hear about it until the morning though and I nearly missed the bus from watching the images. Different experience to those who managed to watch the events unfold from the start, but still a harrowing experience. We ended up talking on the bus about it and came to the conclusion that there was a massive tunnell network under Australia where they were all hiding. Had the same sort of talk at school. We all sort of moved on within a couple of days though.
