Smy thats not my personal attitude just reckon some clubs would go for it given the chance. I'm more in favour of Mayne's Henry Leong type of player coming up through the local ranks such as Everton junoirs playing senior footy.
In saying that if the likes of Hooper, Proud and co are putting in a big effort for the clubs future in return for the coin spent on them eg. such helping juniors etc i'm not against it.

Nah - probably didn't read right Tiger - wasn't saying it was your personal opinion and yes, we can concur on that last sentence. Unfortunately blokes like this are few and far between though. Have to be very selective!

Go the Mighty Mayne Tigers!!!!!!!!! Should of listened to bigfooty!

BOC - not sure where you heard Matthews was "flown in" - Mooloolaba is pretty close to Fish Rd! Owns 2 newsagencies there and always has from when he moved here. Now looking to offload mind you with his new gig at the Suns this year so if you have some spare coin around and love reading newspapers feel free to purchase and we will welcome you with open arms to the Fish Rd experience as well! :)

Re 06 - was sitting in the coaches box at the time and we felt it a good idea to ensure our guns, Langan, L.Matthews, Isles were given a good last qrt rest and spared the chance of injury. The Pumas came pretty hard in the final qrt and I still remember Matthews turning around to us and saying "get me back on the f..n ground"!!:D Little to say but I let him know post match that it was always under control!!
shouldve put him back on! might have needed the match practice for the gf!!!

He did go back on Speedy - his arse was taking up too much room on the bench and noone else could sit down. It was a decision made out of necessity:D

Thats your rivalry match isn't it Tiger?? Must have been a good day. Div 1 is a very even comp currently.
yes in some way, our rivalry is more with Sandgate, there were some big clashes between Mayne and Sandgate back in the day, for example 1973 and 74 GF's were huge!

Saw some of the Sandgate UQ game on Sat. Great effort from the Sandgate boys- wow they are small and young! But they just kept running and backing up against a much bigger UQ who faded as the game went on. If Sandgate could get a couple of good, bigger players (1 fwd, 1 back) they'd be a real threat.

We wouldn't mind a couple either! come to think of it, pretty sure every team in the comp would like a couple........

I think the lesson learnt with Ben Matthews at Maroochydore was that if the goal was
to snag a big name and
  • attract some media attention and hopefully sponsors
  • use the big name to recruit good players to play for less (or nothing) than they normally would due to playing with big name
  • turning a team around that won less than 4 games into coming second
  • use big name to recruit favours from AFL friends for fundraising lunches and dinners etc
then you can mark it down as a huge success.

SMY is correct in that the decision was made by a committee that left at the end of the year, however I don't think it's fair to be critical about volunteers who honestly thought they were doing the right thing at the time.

With the benefit of hindsight, a better strategy would be to bring in the big name with a view to it being a 5 or 10 year strategy.

I am sure that if Ben hadn't taken the role with the Suns this year, he would be back assisting at Maroochydore in some capacity as he had expressed a desire to get into coaching. His kids played for Maroochydore juniors, and if it wasn't for his businesses requiring his attention, he wouldn't have stepped away from the club at all.

The problem is that all of the experience that came from Ben playing and coaching was lost, as there was no under 18s at the time, and 4/5s of the team left at the same time.

As far as I am concerned, Ben as an investment was worth every cent and Maroochydore is certainly a better place for him being involved. I am sure if you asked some of the other blokes that played with him, you would get a very similar response.
