Carlton's Irish Rookie List player, Setanta O'hAilpin, has been elevated to the Primary List, replacing Anthony Franchina who has been placed on the long-term injury list due to a fractured thumb. Franchina will have an operation on his thumb tomorrow, Thursday, and the injury will keep him out for a minimum of eight weeks.

No doubt there will be plenty of interest in Carlton's final training session at Optus Oval on Thursday afternoon with the Big Irishman, "Carlos" potentially in line for a senior call up for this Saturday's game against Adelaide at AAMI Stadium.

Wow - this is an amazing story.
Particularly considering he didnt come from the Gealic footy scene, but from a hurling background - I'm sure thats a first.

What will interest me is where he will slip into our structure & also where the long term plans are for this guy if all pans out well.

Going on recent performances, you would imagine he would line up in a pocket, perhaps interchanging with a deluca or sadly even Whitnall.

I hope in the long term (if he turn out a player) Pagan is hoping he could hold down CHB. Or be the 3rd Tall defender.
He is quick, tall & pretty solid for his age (20), but will get stronger next year without doubt after a big summer on the wieghts.

Good luck to him & hopefully the club will be able to hang their hats on this decision down the track.

Its probably one of the bravest decisions they have made regarding recruiting an X faxtor player since Paul Meldrum walked in off the St. & asked for a game (but even that hardly compares since he already could play footy).

Most kids play Hurling and football in Ireland.
Setanta played football too but didnt make the elite grade (playing seconds i think)

His brother Sean Og was a champion footballer before hurting himself in a car accident and concentrating on just Hurling where he too has earnt ALll Ireland Honours

personally i would start him down forward ... he's 196cm, it means another tall the crows have to match up on. they have hart, mcgreggor, basset, henscell but thats about it i think. we'll have deluca, morrel, whitnall, fev, o'hailpin. means he wont be given the best defender or ne thing and he is a hard match up.

in terms of future. certainly chb would be perfect. thornton, norman and o'hailpin all very young and in a couple of years could form a partnership like the cats have now. its exciting.

Guys i'm a Hawk who just wanted to wish Setanta O'Hailpin all the best if he plays on Saturday. I used to live in Cork in Ireland for a while where he's from and he has an amazing sporting pedigree. He was a top hurler and his older brother won an All Ireland medal for Senior hurling with Cork while being in the Gaelic Senior Football All Ireland final only to be runners up 2 weeks later in 1999. He could have made it out here as well. We've seen some good Irish lads come through our ranks in the last 15-20 years but if i was you guys i'd get very excited,i reckon you could end up with the best of the lot!

Given his exposure to the game being "recent" at best, I hope we can persist with the guy & we see some amazing rewards in the not too distant future.
