There is no doubting that the 2025 season was not exactly what Doveton had in mind after finishing ninth on the ladder and avoiding relegation by one spot.

However, there is plenty of optimism for the Doves ahead of next season after signing some key recruits, as well as reintroducing their under-19 team to the fold.

Zach Dalton is one of the most notable recruits after dominating in Division 4 last season to lead Hallam to its first-ever premiership, also winning the league and club best and fairests.

Along with twin brother Ryan, the pair have found a new home at Robinson Reserve and are hoping to test themselves and play at Division 2 level.

Other new signings include Lachy Merks, Matt Vorbach and returning 2019 premiership player James Gascard, who offers plenty of experience and can even ruck.

“In my first season as coach, we made a prelim final and then last year didn’t pan out how everyone would’ve wanted,” coach Matt Stapleton said.

“But with the retention we have, and then adding the right players into the mix, our intention is to bounce back and bounce back strongly.”

Stapleton said adding both Dalton brothers into the midfield would help strengthen the side’s depth.

“The thing I really like about them is the way they go about their footy and the way they prepare themselves,” he said.

“They will fit in really well and train really hard, which is the most important thing, so performance will take over from there.

“They will be great inclusions for us.”

Lachie Merks stands at 192cm and offers some great versatility at each end.

“He also sits around the early 20s age bracket and has a beautiful left-foot kick,” Stapleton said.

“Big blokes are hard to find and we can’t wait to see him continue to develop, he kicks it well, makes good decisions and has great potential.”

While Vorbach is a 190cm midfielder who has six seasons of senior experience at Bentleigh in SFNL Division 1 under his belt.

“He can also kick goals and can rest forward when he’s not in the midfield,” Stapleton said.

Doveton is also reintroducing its Under-19s program and has appointed Paul Wilson as coach to help get the junior program back up off the ground.

The club last had a side in 2022 and would love to hear from anyone who may be interested in playing or getting involved.

2 Div 4 blokes aren’t going to make a massive difference hallam there bottom 6-8 players is the worst in the division

Seem to have recruited well again this year (from what's been reported on their socials). Still, we said this at this stage last year and they had a stinker.
Many of their recruits (ex-Caulfield: Stephens & Ingham) barely got on the park and I believe are done with footy.

They'd hope Baltas & Short play more than that.

Mordy knocked them off in the finals and have recruited some young talent from Edi-Asp and other neighboring teams.

So both sides look to be stronger on paper than last year.

Won’t matter neither will get close to a full strength Cranbourne

Cranbourne coming down from D1 have added some really good players, Holt coming back is enormous, he will kick 4+ a game on average but at 42 years old he’ll only play 6-8 games. They got a big young bloke Marotta from Frankston VFL who will smash Division2 and if he sits in the square will challenge Morrisby for the league goal kicking. Cranbourne also have a few players returning from long term injury and a couple back from Rosebud. Make no mistake they’ll be as stacked as Murrumbeena, Hampton Park and Brighton the last 3 years. The only challenger will be East Malvern, their midfield is still strong and adding Short at Centre Half Back and Baltas as a mid forward will be very very strong! They wiouls both be difference makers in division 1, they were part of the CGFC Prem B flag with Morrisby a couple of years ago so them going to D2 is taking the piss.

Doveton are a shambles, firing Cardamore mid season and then appointing the presidents son… the “footy ops manager” Stapleton to the senior coaching role with no coaching experience was bound to have long term cracks, and they may have brought in a handful of D4 blokes and Gascard back but they have also lost a handful too. Chapman who didn’t play last year has signed down at Sunbury too. Doveton are a high chance of being a perennial D2 team like Keysborough. Both who wanted to go straight into D1. Now an accumulative 14 seasons later……

I would throw in Mordialloc as a contender as well. Have recruited well.

Absolutely agree with all that m8 cranny will be hard to beat and holt even at 42 is still as good as any forward in Div 2 if not the best and Doveton will be not much better than last year i have listened to them for years bag the sfl and the arrogance of some people who said they were to good for Div 2 has gone back to bite them big time and I love it to be honest

Agree i.e Keysy and Doveton. Early days of coming across to Southern they were strong, but couldn't get to div 1. Now, they're in a terrible spot where other teams have as much money to offer if not more, also are in better positions to recruit as well. They're both not very desirable clubs to go to without any future prospects such as 19s. Hampton Park made the smart move with investing in Bully who had a great network of mates to bring with him. I'd suggest Keysy or Dovey do the same or find a gold mine to offer overs to players, otherwise I see them both getting relegated before promoted.

Agree m8 bull has been great for the club and a lot of the players they have recruited last year and this year are from good standard football and most are in a good age bracket around mid 20s not guys coming at the end of there career looking to cash in on there last few years they leaned from a few seasons ago doing that and from there first season in sfnl in Div 3 were they thought they would win it easy but got beaten by springy districts were keysy and Doveton didn’t learn from there mistakes and kept underestimating the comp to be fair keysy would of won it i think in 2015 if Tyson king didn’t do his knee mid season he was a absolute star one of the best local players iv seen until he got injured and a good bloke
