Shae claims Magpies erred with Dawes

The question is should he have kept to himself, in my opinion - he should have. Coaches are allowed to change their minds, tactics, roles for players and the coaching staff obviously thought we needed the big yank down back.

Shea was terrific when at the Pies, at least you knew he was committed and passionate about the jumper.

At the end of the day he wasn't good enough and deep down I hope he realises it. In our game, you need to be versatile and not play the one position like American Football or Basketball for that matter.

All the best Shea.

I think it is fair to say, reading between the lines, we saw greater potential in other players to succeed as forward/rucks than Shae. This in effect was Witts and Ceglar.
Add to that the walking talking penis in Cam Wood who also demanded time as a ruck/ forward for the majority of the year in the VFL. 5 Players, 2 positions?

If he didn't feel the $40k was enough, he was entitled to walk away when his contract expired.

It's just weird for a guy with no intrinsic, natural knowledge of the game can criticise blokes who've played more in their lives than he ever will. And especially someone like Nathan Buckley, a, uh, noteworthy footballer.

I agree with you but I was making a point about the money.

He has built up a lot of good-will in the past between himself and the club and with the fans. He seems to be "burning a few bridges", although he might think that he's never going to return to AFL in ANY way, it just might happen. First American AFL commentator? Hosting an AFL show on ESPN?

What I think happened was that we made a poor list management decision by bringing too many ruckman on the list and it was inevitable that someone was going to need to be experimented in some unsuitable roles. Unfortunately for Shae this was him to defence. Gault to an extent too. I think it is fair to say, reading between the lines, we saw greater potential in other players to succeed as forward/rucks than Shae. This in effect was Witts and Ceglar.

Unfortunate but I think the reality of having too many talls on our list that year.
A very astute, extremely good looking man with an incredible physique already stated this in post 26 Quicky.

You were quick to steal his thunder?

Quicky by name & Quicky by nature?:p

Man he's just letting rip on his former club, Guy sounds like he has no class.

I don't think that's quite right, but perhaps there might be a slight element of that.

Up until a a couple of months ago he was full of class. Since then he's made a few comments about his time at Collingwood (and incidentally, his tryout with your mob) that that when read in an unkind way might be interpreted as 'sour grapes'.

I wouldn't be surprised if Ugle, Wood, etc all said similar kind of things, except that there is no media interest in those players so they just go unreported.

Perhaps there might be some cultural aspect to his behaviour too. And that's not necessarily American culture, just the culture of somebody who has lived somewhere else and played different sports. Perhaps they're more inclined to compare and judge? And we're more inclined to listen to them and get defensive when they're anything less than complementary about our game and our footy team.

I haven't seen or read anything from Shae to suggest he's not a good bloke. I just think he should have been given a bit of advice about a few things when he left. Perhaps he was, but he didn't listen?

Check my posting history out. I've been saying this for a long while!

This thread is a good example of the complete lack of understanding of the cultural difference between the mindset of an American and Australian athlete. It's almost as though we're from opposite ends of the world....

Shae is a prototypical US sportsman, with a media persona common to American sports. To us he's arrogant, to an American (and Shae himself) he is simply speaking his mind as all people should.

So its ok if we say he comes across as an arrogant twat with those comments? Because we'd just be speaking our mind and all.

I myself love the brash in your face attitude of many American athletes because the thing is most can back it up. A prime example is the recent comments from Randy Moss of the 49er's.

http://www.freep.com/article/201301...-I-am-the-all-time-greatest-NFL-wide-receiver

Now that I'm older, I do think I'm the greatest receiver to ever do it.

I don't really live on numbers. I live on impact and what you're able to do out on that field, so I really do think that I'm the greatest receiver to ever play this game.

He said that in the main press conference before the friggen Superbowl.

Shae on the other hand just doesn't come across well considering he achieved 2/5th's of stuff all in his career. If you wan't to talk the talk you better be able to walk the walk and Shae just couldn't pull off the latter and a more respectful approach would have been advisable.

Randy Moss might actually have some truth to what he's saying. I prefer Martellus Bennett's "black unicorn" comments, they were utterly hilarious.

Maybe Shae does come from a culture where it's ok to talk yourself up, but it's also ok over there for the media to completely shitcan you if you're not up to it, or overstating your case. If he were ever to read this thread, he certainly couldn't cry foul at the lukewarm reaction he's getting.

Dawes spent enough time on the ground, in a key forward position in both 2011 and 2012 to make an impact if he had the form and talent to do so. All the crap about him being played out of position and failing because he had to be second ruck is complete garbage. The last 18 months he played his disposal was terrible, his marking, reading of play, positioning, contested possession, all terrible.. He had one average ok game in every eight, he wasn't made to ruck all that often, and anything blaming coaching for his failure is ignorant. He had plenty of opportunities to prove his worth and by the end he wasn't worth the risk of taking in to 2013.

Dawes is a lovely guy, he has integrity and intelligence and its a shame to see him go.
Have to have the skills to go with it though and sadly they faded over the last couple of seasons.
He's driven to succeed, I hope he finds his 2010 form again at Melbourne and makes his mark as a full forward.

As for Shae if he had shown some talent, in any position, they would have tried him out, but he just didn't have what it took.
Not as a forward or a back, or a ruck for that matter.

76er: Seems that the club made a mistake too. Players shouldn't get to the stage of being delisted without knowing why they've failed.

Being pretty generous there. I don't think he coming from someway back deserves to dictate his position. My bet is he was presented with a ruck-fwd option but couldn't do it, so they shuffled him around. He then asks other players "Hey, what gives?" and they flatter his ego.

He then believes players were perplexed that he was played out of position.

Either way its the salient point. Shae should have had access to players and coaches above ego flattering. The club should have an ongoing process (including on exit) that leaves players in no doubt as to their assessment.

To me this gives more smoke to the idea there is/was an undercurrent of dissent regarding Bucks player management.

He wasnt delisted, his time as a rookie expired and he wasnt promoted. I'm sure the reasons were expalined to him clearly enough but theres only so many ways of saying " we couldnt find room for you on the main list or reasons to make room for you on the main list".

Having met Shae, I found him nice but also really arrogant. At least 1/2 of my family is American, including my husband, so I am very aware of "arrogant Americans"....he was just a little too over the top for me. Seems to me he has a little of that American attitude to put blame elsewhere....IYKWIM. But, he was also very nice.

No really, you guys need to read some Martellus Bennett interviews, the guy is on another planet but he's hilarious.

"I'm kind of bigger than I was. I'm more muscular than I was in the past. I actually started lifting weights really, really hard. But I'm in the best shape I've ever been. Ask any of the guys in the camp, I'm stronger than I've ever been, I'm faster than I've ever been. I could run all day. I'm kind of like a black unicorn out there. It's amazing to watch. You go out there and you see a big, black guy running down the field, it's usually me. So I'm pretty good out there. It's been great so far."
