Shae McNamara was listed as the best player in our loss last Saturday. Tarks has put him on the wing and Shae has responded by "taking some big steps".

I must admit that I couldnt see him ever getting a game in the seniors, but maybe he's been going to bed listening to positive thinking CDs from Nick Maxwell's private collection.

Good to see, would love to see him get a kick in the AFL.

Why's that? I've only really seen him play in the NAB cup, but from what I saw there I thought he had definite seniors potential

Shae could be the next Nic Nat type player (I mean, he probably won't be as good as he is but he can ruck/rover at the same time) Considering he hadn't played a game of AFL or a sport that is like AFL then he is doing incredibly. I really hope he does get a senior game in the future. It looks like he could play more of a utility role, and his size is great too. Just need to see if he can present in the big time, or if he is just cruising around in the VFL level.

I thought McNamara showed just as much as Keeffe did during the NAB Cup, and he's been named as an emergency a number of times and now gotten a game himself.

He's been pretty good since becoming the number 1 ruck, and this week as a wing men.

Had a couple of high teen, 20 odd disposable games.

Starting to think those saying he looks lost are more trying to convince themselves because he's a "yank" then actually being honest.

May not be up to our best 22 but certainly isn't lost, or no where near it

best option with him would try and trade him... his already 26? and if he did come into the team in the future would take him awhile to get settled in afl level and even then he would just be ok imo :( maybe gws or port would be interested and a 3rd round pick for him wouldnt be too bad

There's a lot of PR invested in Shae. Have a look at the NY magpies internet site and you get the impression he's a bit of poster-boy for overseas players who want to make it in the AFL. I just dont think we're going to trade him without giving him a chance in the seniors

btw. he's not on the list so its hard to trade him...

I didn't know that Rookies could be traded. Can they?
Thought they brought the rule in last year where you could trade rookies but if you trade for one he has to be elevated to your senior list.

He is a good reserves player, will he get a game in 2011, probably not. Will he get one in 2012.. unlikely. That will take him to 28 years of age?

You would be correct. The rule hasn't been utilized yet though and probably won't anytime soon.

If he has another good game in the VFL this week, could he possibly get a game against the GC?
Would be a great story and one of the stories of the year. Imagine the PR it would get leading into the game.

i could see the experiment being a 2 way street.

shae is here to fasttrack his development into an AFL player (if thats possible) and likewise the club learn things good & bad about taking someone raw (and not from gaelic) and try to mould them into a viable prospect.

if the club learn things to assist with the next international or ex-rugby type then its been a worthwhile process. and considering the quality of coaching shae has received in his time his CV improves dramatically too.

next head of USAFL player development ?

I think what Jarred Witts does in the twos, could help decide Shae McNamara's spot on the list. If Jarred Witts does well than the pies could look at off loading Cameron Wood as they might view him as a player fighting for the number 2 spot with Shae. I think at present Cameron Wood is the better player and a reasonable back up for Jolly. McNamara has more upside despite being 2 years older and is more chance to play the leigh Brown type role. I dont think it would be a bad move to give him a game as a ruck to see how he goes. Next year I dont think we have a spot for both Shae and Wood.

I think he does have a chance in the Seniors with the way he's improving atm. It's sad to think that he's 26, if only he was a few years younger. But in the next year I see him more as a backup player who would only come in if we were out of Ruckman or Key Forwards. He would be fighting with Keefe, Wood, N.Brown and possible Ceglar for a spot. And that's not counting the possibility of a Ruck/Key Forward draft this year.

I really hope he makes it. Collingwood is lucky they have the money to afford such a gamble.

When you think about it there would be 100,000 of american boys who are potenially skilled and athletic enough to become afl footballers who dont even know about the game. Its not just an australian gene!

I wish he was younger though. Anyway he cant come in unless he is off the rookie list!

I would have done it last week - week of US Independence day and everything.

As we saw, Shae wouldn't have been necessary to do much else than stand like a scarecrow for us to obliterate the Kangas.

Ah well, GC it is...

That is an awesome point. Would love to see Shae get a game. He bleeds Black & White. They should do it. We could play half the VFL side and would go alright. It's a shame guys like Sinclair & Thomas have only just came back from injury otherwise it would be good to see them play. We should rest 8 or so players for that game and be a perfect break before finals!
