Worth having a thread on this guy after his 35 possession game today. Might be good enough for top 10.

SHANE NELSON
D.O.B: 11/05/1993
Position: Midfielder
Height: 178cm
Weight: 70kg
WAFL club: West Perth

THE RUNDOWN:
This bullish yet classy midfielder is likely to go top 20 in the next draft.

Nelson is playing his second year in WA’s state 18s and if his 2010 form as a 16-year-old is anything to go by, this year he should solidify his bright future.

The West Perth colt is regarded as WA’s best midfielder alongside Stephen Coniglio and Jaeger O’Meara, but also possesses another key string to his football bow - toughness.

Nelson can find the footy around congestion and is not afraid of a physical clash, but he is also skilful.

He is well balanced at full-speed and one of WA’s most accurate kicks, with his penetrating right-foot providing forwards with precise marking opportunities. Insiders are comparing him to Richmond’s Dustin Martin, and we all know his progression this year

Horrible write up.

Kicking is solid but isn't one of his strengths. He's a speedy midfielder who likes to run link up and he picks up allot of handballs when he does so. He's seriously slippery and his hands are excellent. Pretty strong overhead, excellent endurance and is capable of kicking bags of goals.

Nothing like Martin.

Agree he is nothing like Martin. I, too, thought his kicking was competent without being outstanding. I was shocked to see him top the kicking test at the Draft Combine. It makes me think that the kicking test doesn't necessarily paint an accurate picture. This is not to detract from his performance, but to see him on the run and under pressure in games will be the true test.

Heard his WA coach on radio during trade week and said he consistently racks up possessions.

I suppose if you have a bloke who wins the footy and has it for your team then it is always going to be better than the other side having it.

Would be a great fit for Freo if they decide against Kersten.

Would be able to get both. Its not a known that freo are going to take Kersten and whether he will be available its just a BF thing of matching a local kid with a WA team who needs tall forwards. You sound like they have already just about locked in Kersten at 16.

See the similarity?

not sure why hes slipped in the draft, averaged about 33 touches a game over the last 2 seasons of colts footy for west perth. kicks goals, breaks tags every game, with little support from his team mates. runs all day and just makes things happen. doesnt get the hype as the bigger name Wa guys like coniglio but is in the same class.

Couldn't believe it either. Will surely get taken in the rookie draft you would think.

Typical player who slips, no name (Ala Hill). Everyone at Westperth would pick Nelson 100% over Brad Hill and he goes at 33. Kicking worries regarding penetration, small and slightly framed although after seeing him on saturday i had to question the second one he is very wide from chest to spine. Solid.

Also had injury problems maybe a his medical wasnt great. Finished the year poorly, had an underperforming champs but that is nit picking. But he didnt stand up at reserves level against the bigger bodies and its a major thing the recruiters look at and it wouldnt have read well, although as i said had injury problems during this time, which again doesn't read well with AFL teams/recruiters.

Nelson lost seven Kilo's because of sickness.

Averaged 32 touches a game in the colts.
2.87s time in the 20m sprint
8.13s in the agility test.
29 out of 30 in the kicking test (hitting 15/15 on his non-preffered)
Runs a 15+ beep.

His running power is really good, he get's to a lot of contests and keeps up his intensity.

Those are all pretty impressive numbers so why wasn't he picked?

Has he had off field dramas?

Very strange, oh well another good rookie chance.:thumbsu:

WTF I can't believe he wasn't even rookie listed. Would have to be the unluckiest not to be picked up.

BUMP.

Played four games for West Perths reserves side averaging 22.7 touches a game, he's since played four League games for the Falcons averaging 22 touches and averaged just under a goal a game. But those numbers are pointless for what is essentially a kid stepping up to seniors for the first time. His last two games.

29 Disposals, 14 Marks, 0 goals.
30 disposals, 4 Marks, 1 Goal, 6 Tackles

He's injected life and spark into West Perths side.

I wish we would have at least rookie listed him last year. Will no doubt end up at West Coast or Freo next season and rip it up for them

Well that might end up being the case, but they are very different footballers. Now id compare Blackwell with Black from West Perth and Elari from PerthFC.

Neslon is yet to spend four years on an AFL list in the case of Blackwell and three years in the case of Browne.

I never watched Blackwell play before 2009 so i can't comment on his VFL form which was from the sounds of things pretty good, but form alone isn't all that important because again they are very different players. Nelson has two yards of pace on Blackwell and attacks the goal face on a regular basis.

Had another 30 odd possession game yesterday against perth. Seen 3 or 4 of his games this season and whilst i'd agree his kicking isnt fantastic its still decent..

With his running ability and decent pace i would be more than happy if melbourne took him.

I have never actually seen the kid play as of yet but seen some stats and i was under the impression his kicking was close to elite. Like i said though i have never seen him play and there is a big difference between game intensity kicking and the Buckley testing.

What type of player is he exactly, is he an inside/outside player? Is he quick? Can he take a mark? Any thing that really sticks out about the kid?

Gets his possessions both contested and uncontested... marking hasnt really stood out to me but I havent been watching for it... His run is great and he looks to have decent pace. Good tackler and can kick a few goals

Cheers mate, hope he gets a go at AFL level to see how he goes
