I know most will know by now, but an Adelaide teenager was attacked and killed by a shark today of West Beach in Adelaide today.

Although I do not know this person or his friends it hit extremely close to home and I would like to take this chance to pass on my condolences to the boys family and his friends.

I have been in the Adelaide metro waters my entire life and never imagined something like this could happen on our beaches, I was truly shocked and horrified by todays news.

I also hope that people will not take on a vigilante approach and kill this amazing animal and others like it. We have to remember that every time we enter the water we are entering their territory and thus take a risk albeit a very small risk.

Once again I wish the best to the family and friends involved and hope to god that his body can be retrieved to aid the healing process.

It does hit hard to those who don't even know him.

Just to think what the poor blighter suffered..........

I've lived in Adel nearly my whole life - and realised that it could've been me, or a mate or a relative.

Scary thoughts, especially seeing him on the front page of the paper.

RIP Mr Peterson.

I was in the water at Brighton yesterday when a police car drove onto the beach telling everyone to get out of the water because of two shark sitings. Very surreal stuff, absolutely terrible for the family.

What time were you down there? We went down for a swim about 6:30 and the police eventually drove down and told the few people swimming to get out.

Why did you think it could never happen?

A few months back a surfer was killed down south here in WA. A few years ago a man was mauled to death in about 2 feet of water off suburban Cottesloe beach. Each time the question has raged "To kill the shark or not". What are your views?

If the sharks kill people on land then kill them, if it hapens in their territory then nothing should happen.

Also heard on the news, that there had been warnings put out at that beach, of sharks being in the area, so if you ignore these warnings & take the risk, not really the sharks fault is it.

Very sad thing that happened to that boy all the same, would be a horrible way to die. :(

Another report of the shark this morning about 50m offshore in between the Grange and Henley jettys..

Also another report about 1/2 hour later that a 17ft Great white was circling the Grange jetty..
Serious stuff.. as like everyone else.. my condolences go out to his friends and family

The problem is Carcharadon eats Seals and Dolphins.Humans in wet suits look like Seals to a Shark,so if a shark sees a Seal,it's food isnt it?.And Sharks really dont like the taste of humans, which is why they discard body parts.

Ridiculous question. Of course not.
Well argued and clearly thoroughly thought out. There is a school of research that has shown migratory pelagic shark species will often head inshore to feed when they are either incapable of finding their normal food source or they are injured. If such a shark finds that humans are an easy and abundant supply of food then they may resort to that more and more often.

Very informative sign if one lived in Hawaii... fail to see the relevence to West Beach or how it would have been visible for the incident yesterday, or the two sightings at Henley or Grange this morning... perhaps you may have the answer to that one zeke.

Tell that to the yanks. They kill people for the hell of it, so why not animals.
In 1916,in New Jersey, there was a huge shark scare. The Shark,or sharks, were never found nor killed by humans.

Do you think it was the same sharks in Adelaide yesterday?

Sounds like their local councel is debating if the shark should live. Interesting... prosecuting a shark. There would be strong arguments from both sides.

The way I see it, humans are terrestrial animals, sharks are marine animals, that's the way mother nature intended it. As such a human would never be on the shrark's menu and would ony kill someone out of confusion. Most threatening sharks would leave people alone, but this clearly didn't and can be deemed a man-killer. Apparently, he's been hanging around the shores for days harrassing boats so it was no accident. IMO he would kill again if he had the chance. However, he's a massive animal of an endangered species and his death would cause outrage from many people. I don't think we'll see that shark again, so I think we should just tag it and let it swim off out to sea. Although the discision should come from the victim's family.

Come on RGB, we all know shark attacks are relatively common SA waters. Hell, they filmed the underwater shots in Jaws at Dangerous Reef.

What made this attack more horrific and truly bizarre than the countless others we've seen over the years (including last year when the unlucky bugger was snatched off the rocks) is the fact that this kid taken by TWO Great Whites, which according to witnesses, virtually went tag team on him.

I've never heard of this happening before.

They are saying it was now only one shark, and the witness's were so traumatised that they got confused. What ever the case, Very sad for all involved.
