Atley is a lively midfielder who is also comfortable playing down back. He represented Vic Country at the 2008 Under-16 Championships, playing three matches and averaging 17 disposals, four inside 50s and three clearances. In 2009 he played 11 matches for the Murray Bushrangers, averaging 20 disposals and an elite nine contested possessions per game which included four loose ball - gets per match – ranked seventh of the players to have played 5 or more games. AFL Prospectus

Inside and outside midfielder and half-back with a lot of grunt and a turn of speed. Big reason why Vic Country won the championships. No tricks to speak of, but a terrific type whose build suggests endurance. Paul Daffey

Exceptionally agile player with great speed and endurance and twice runner-up in state hurdles, which highlights his athletic ability. All-Australian team member in the 2010 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, where he averaged 19 disposals and six tackles. Kevin Sheehan

In his own words

What type of player are you?
An inside and outside midfielder who likes to run and carry the ball.

Which AFL player do you feel you resemble and why?

Chris Judd - can win the ball in a contested situation and feed it out to team mates.

What are your strengths as a footballer?
The ability to get out of the traffic with the ball, clean hands, run and carry.

What parts of your game would you like to improve?
Becoming a more effective kick.

Which AFLteam do you support and how did you come to barrack for them?
St. Kilda. My old babysitter convinced me they were a good team.

Who has been the biggest influence on your career so far, and why?
Dad, just because of the advice he has given me growing up.

Shaun Atley (Vic Country)
The medium midfielder was a clear best on ground in his side’s close win over WA. With great leg speed, exceptional awareness and quick hands, the Murray Bushranger looks set to be snapped up early in this year’s draft.

Will track this guy from now on. seems like a gun in close. love the roos to get him to complete our impressive young mid. looks like a top 10 choice?

Reminded me a bit of Scott Pendlebury with his Inside Work and Left Foot

I would rate his footskills above average but not elite nice long smooth left foot, but certainly a good kick.

He is right up their with the second tier in this draft (Parker, Green, Gaff, Darling, Wallis) with maybe a touch more upside than some, but a well rounded prospect.

He got a good wrap from Shifter from TAC cup future stars. Said he would probably go around the pick 8 mark.
That will probably put the mockers on him. He is a good kid, but he didn't finish the carnival was well as he started it.
I hope I can see him during the U18 finals, but Murray might not cooperate.

Pretty interested I believe

From Paul Daffey - Vic Country’s outstanding midfielder was Shaun Atley, who’s expected to go in the top 10 in the draft. Some have him as high as top five or six.

Atley can play as a creative midfielder, a half-back, a half-forward, or a run-with player. He’s good overhead, he has lightning pace off the mark, and he disposes to great effect.

His game against Western Australia in Perth was brilliant, but he was so impressive over the duration of the carnival that Vic Country coach Robert Hyde and his selectors named him their best player.

My bandwagon this year. Love him, both his inside and outside work on the weekend was impressive.

Would you say he reminds you of Luke Shuey, Splendini? Or is Shuey more inside?

Cheers :thumbsu:

Looks like his BF stock is flying as people try to unravel that 'Stephen Hill' type player with upside.

Except Atley is nothing like Hill. :D:thumbsu:

Obvious comparison is Bennell but a more achievable option would be Andreoli.
