Was truly a great horse of Australian racing. Really was one of my favourites for many years, and always gave a good honest showing in each race. I thought he was finished come the start of this year, but once again he proved many people wrong and fought back to end up favourite for the Group 1 Emirates Stakes.
My greatest Shogun memory was his 2nd place in the 2001 Doncaster handicap. On a leader-bias track, Assertive Lad has the run of the race and won comfortably, but it was Shogun Lodge who flew home against the running and came second. Probably was the stroy of his career, with many runners-up in Group races, often due to circumstances.
It's always sad when a horse breaks down on the race track, and it's even sadder when the horse has magnificently graced our races for many years. I, and I'm sure many, are just thankful that jockey Glen Boss is ok, he is a very lucky man to still be walking.
