Hi,

I've got a shoulder injury which I need to see a specialist about. Have had X-rays and ultrasound so far, and the indication at the moment is that I have MDI (multidirectional instability) of the shoulder joint. I played a lot of tennis as a kid, and it looks like I've probably been doing damage to my shoulder for a long time.

I'm trying to work out who to see about the injury and just wondering if anyone can recommend a specialist. I'm in Melbourne. The ones I've heard of so far are:

Greg Hoy - has the best reputation for shoulders in Melbourne, but 4 month wait to see him.
Stewart Proper - can't find much info about him online, but he did a shoulder replacement on a relative, which turned out pretty well.
Shane Barwood - works out of the same place as Greg Hoy.
Matthew Evans - works out of the same place as Greg Hoy.
John Salmon - does work for AFL clubs and seems well recommended.

Does anyone have experience with these guys, or can recommend others who have done a good job? If the waiting list for Hoy wasn't 4 months, I'd definitely see him, but would prefer to get this sorted out ASAP.

Thanks.

Salmon did my reco almost two years ago, been really good so far. Broke my collarbone on the same shoulder last year but shoulder was fine! Seemed like a pretty good bloke, knew his stuff.

have you done a long term rotator cuff and scapular retraining program? because the rehab for an inferior capsular shift is a pain in the ass and takes a while. you're looking at 6 weeks without moving your arm in any direction then a very slow strengthening and mobilisation program

Booked in to see Stewart Proper next week and will see what he has to say. Ideally, I'd obviously like to avoid surgery, so I'll definitely be looking at non-surgical options if possible.
