Silverchair splits

Sad :( They were my first concert and even though some of their newer (unrecorded) stuff sounded shite, it's depressing that our charts now have one less half decent Australian act fighting off all that American tripe.

Frogstomp was good.

Every other album bar the last album had a few strong tracks but a fair bit of filler.

Emotion Sickness and Israel's Son in particular were cool.

Could never stand them, and have enjoyed this recent time period where their music hasn't been getting milked everywhere you turn (I swear I used to hear "Straight Lines" at least three times a day when it was a current single). Hopefully this news doesn't spur too much of a revival of airplay.

They went downhill big time after Diorama - thier first two albums were good, the rest.......meh.

What are the radio stations going to do now, considering they play them on high rotation.

While I was never really a fan, I always saw them as an interesting band, that were continually improving. Young Modern wasnt my thing, but their evolution over the years was fascinating. Diorama wasnt far off being an incredible album.
Ana's Song and Across the Night are easily my two favourite tracks from them.

I have always respected Daniel Johns / Silverchair for never playing it "safe" and trying to musically evolve by going in different directions and trying different sounds.

Thought it was all shit though.

They peaked with Frogstomp, should have called it quits after that.

Daniel Johns tried to make them more sophisticated and arty with their subsequent albums but they were mostly rubbish with the odd good track.

First Powderfinger now Silverchair.

Who's got the mantle of no 1 australian band now? The Living End?

The Church.

They had it before Powderfinger and Silverchair, well in my opinion anyway.

Who's got the mantle of no 1 australian band now?

I would nominate The Jezabels as Australia's best overall band right now, but they're probably not mainstream or "rock" sounding enough for a lot of people's liking.

Maybe The Vasco Era can step up and take the crown. Best "rock" band in Australia IMO.

Grinspoon. :thumbsu:

I reckon in regards of silverchair, Johnsy believed his own hype too much after getting too big too quickly and went too far away from what made the band likeable and good.
And that's not dressing in a mirrorball suit and hanging out with paul mac (who incidentally has also fallen in a hole), it was well written rock songs. However, i think Johnsy does what Johnsy wants to do.

Fantastic song and a fantastic performance:

I'm not particularly a Silverchair fan, nor do I ever usually watch the ARIAS, but I still remember watching it that year (the last one I watched in fact) and Silverchair just blew everybody else off the stage. It is probably the reason why I stopped watching the ARIAS and listening to Australian commercial music altogether.... How can one (pop) band's best be THAT much better than every other (pop) band in Australia? The rest of that ARIA show was just filled with terrible music and very average performances by very average artists.... it was embarrassing how bad it was, and what our commercial music scene had become... and then Silverchair came out with that performance and, as I said, just blew the rest of the Australian pop music industry off the planet as far as I'm concerned.

When Daniel Johns was on, he was ****ing on. :thumbsu:

That said, I don't actually like 95% of the stuff Daniel Johns wrote either, but that remaining 5%... I absolutely love. Some amazing songs in there. :thumbsu: (and you can be sure that none of those songs are on Frogstomp or Freakshow....)

First Powderfinger now Silverchair.

Please!!!
Sick Puppies have held that mantle for a long time now IMO, just get Absolutely no recognition here, (until recently)
Have been MASSIVE in the states for years now, selling out everywhere

I guess Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds are still kicking as well, but they always had more of an international flavour than some other recent australian bands.
