Was very impressed with the kids debut today, from an outside view looks like you found yourself another good rookie!

From yours guys view, what you think - reckon he will hold a spot all year now?

No.

If Bevan is okay and Malceski comes back, then it doesn't look like he'll be selected next week.

Also, Jared Crouch should be back soon and Nick Davis maybe in a few weeks, even Jarred Moore. I just don't see him holding a spot.

not after missing in front inside 50 but it was his first go for goal in his AFL career. we'll wait and see what Roos'y thinks

It wasn't even just that, personally i think Baz should have just gone for the goal himself. Sometimes we need him to be selfish.

gotta bulk up 4 sure

He is so small, even smaller then i expected. His shirt even looked way too big on him, like he was a little kid in a man's shirt. He didn't look right running out with them. If the game would have been in Sydney people could have mistaken him for the 2UE child that runs out with them.

Geez, give him a break natlovestheswans! It's his first game. We can't expect him to perform to the levels of the Williams, Boltons, Kirks etc... He'll take time and i have no problem with it.

Simon Phillips did well for a first gamer and is an inspiration around the players

Everyones entitled to their opionion, I think he did some special things and the missing of that goal under the pressure is understandable - he will learn from that and I believe he will go on to a dedicated Swans player.

Remember its his first game and if you read the reserves thread
he has worked hard to be elevated off the rookie list and into his first game, you treat him with contempt. Give him a chance to prove himself, thats not possible after just one game, all the pandits say he played well.

Its not the size of your body that counts on the top most level of AFL, ITS THE SIZE OF ONES HEART - many players in the past have proved that, and Bobby Skilton ( nick name the chimp) was probably the most famous of them - 168cm and the great Swan went on to win three Brownlow medals. In todays game there are also many other players his size and even smaller. The kid just turned nineteen a couple of months ago, give him a go.

Critizing him because of his size is immature

I'm not saying that, i'm saying i don't think he will selected again. I don't care if he is, but right now isn't the right time for him to be in the team, atleast i don't so anyway, not when players like Malceski, Davis, Moore and Crouch will all be up for selection again soon.

Hall was correct to look for a player in a better position and he found his target. In the midst of the fact that Phillips missed the goal, the fact that it was a gutsy pressured mark he took has been lost. How intimidating would it have been for him, lining that goal up?

I don't think he looks quite ready for regular senior football yet but I was impressed by how he kept on keeping on after his first few touchs weren't productive. I reckon he should get one more game in the seniors to see if its a little easier second time around and in a less hostile environment.

I love the look of this kid. He certainly has a lot of heart. Just remember Matthew Lappin would've been about the same size when he started in the AFL and he turned out to be a pretty good player.
Kicked 1.3 tonight and easily could've had four as all of his behinds hit the post.
Well done to the little fella. :thumbsu: :)

How skinny was Aussie Jones.

although he played better tonight, I still think he's too slight for AFL this year and mearly keeping Nick Davis' place warm till he comes back.

Spoilsport :D

You are right, of course. That said, got a much better look at Simon this week. And the kid definitely has goal sense. Quite an exciting night getting more of a glimpse at the depth of our list.

But boy did his size make the little fella hard to tackle!! :p

Also made it hard for him to lay a tackle.

Another spoilsport :D

Again you are right. I'm still going to give the kid an encouraging :thumbsu: though.

lol. :D i love this new kid, he is very small but full of potential. His 3 posters against Richmond shows some signs. His first goal attempt against WEagles was off but did you see his face??? He looked soo scared...all the pressure was on him, and of course the fans booing. Poor thing... love this kid!

Snides, Amon vs. Phillips
9 August 2006
sydneyswans.com.au

Four weeks ago it was 'Simon who'?… but now the speedy small forward has played four consecutive games since being elevated from the rookie list.

In this week's Inner Sanctum, Adam Schneider and Amon Buchanan chat with Simon Phillips.

Snides: I am here with Amon, him and I will interview Simon Phillips, nicknamed the ‘Flipper’. Tell us about where you grew up?

Flipper: I am originally from Victoria, lived in a place call Morrabbin. I moved to Sydney when I was 18, drafted as a rookie.

Monty: How do you find living in Sydney and living with Lewis Roberts-Thomas and Paul Bevan?

Flipper: It is really good. Lewis and Paul are two really good guys and I like living with them. They are pretty funny blokes, so it has been an enjoyable experience.

Snides: They tell us you like walking around with not much on?

Flipper: I am not sure where you go that from but no!

Snides: What about posing for photo’s with your shirt off for the girls?

Flipper: It has been known to happen.

Snides: Who has had the biggest influence on you at the Swans?

Flipper: I think the two guys I live with would have had the most influence. They look after me pretty well and have gotten me into some pretty good habits. The coaches as well.

Snides: What about me?

Flipper: Yes, I can give credit to Amon and Snides, two small forwards that I have learnt a bit off as well.

Snides: Thanks mate. Tell us about your debut over at Subiaco against West Coast….

Flipper: It was very exciting to play my first game. I was surprised to get picked I guess, coming straight off the rookie list and being promoted to the senior list and then to play my first game that same week. It was a little bit of a shock but I was told early in the week so I had a bit of time to settle down and sleep well, which was handy. I was quite nervous leading up to the game but once I got to playing the game, the excitement and being out there was just a big thrill. It is something you dream about, I have anyway, since I was eight and playing AFL. I enjoyed it!

Monty: I also believe it is a dream to open a café one day?

Flipper: Let's just say since I have come to Sydney I don’t mind a bit of a coffee, so if I did open a café I might call it the ‘De-Flipper Café’ and the special drink might be the ‘Flippercino’.

Snides: Is it true some people mistake you for a jockey when you go out?

Flipper: No, but it has been floating around, I guess because of my weight and height and being one of the smallest blokes at the Club, it managed to get out. I think Mago (O'Loughlin) mentioned it on TV and a few people have caught on to it, but I don’t like it. I would rather keep with ‘Flipper’.

Monty: Are you getting more recognised now-a-days?

Flipper: No, it doesn’t happen, we live in Sydney.

Snides: How did you get the name Flipper?

Flipper: I guess something from my last name. When I was younger I had a similar nickname but they have shortened it to Flipper. It stuck last year during U18’s and I just brought it up here.

Snides: Thank you for your time Simon.

Monty: Good luck for the rest of the year champ.

Flipper: Cheers.
