I mean this is in the best possible taste, but apart from the Daicos4Ever post on the main board did anyone bother to substantiate that he passed away? Not tempting the inevitable but I have seen or heard nothing in any form of media.

No, I havent seen or heard anything from the media either.. I would have thought it would at least be on the Roos site (a small piece written by Pagan or Mick) but I s'pose its better for the family, that the media arent around and they ahve some privacy.

Go Roos

the only thing i've ever heard of Skinny Martyn has been in an article about him making the statues out the fronta Arden and on the footy show that time. I don't wanna sound rude but either the Roos have taken it overboard or the AFL has downright snubbed him!

The first I heard of Skinny's passing away was due to Daicos4Ever's post on the main board. I, and many others here, took him on his word as he is a part of the Martyn clan.

The club has released an official statement which RadioShark has posted on the main board.

It's confirmed

The Roos remember Bryan Martyn, a true Shinboner
By Karen Lyon
June 11 2002

The Kangaroos football club lost one of its most loved and cherished figures on Sunday evening when Bryan "Skinny" Martyn lost his long battle with cancer. The former club champion and long-time Kangaroos stalwart was 71.

Martyn had battled bowel and liver cancer for almost three years, but his illness only became public in recent months.

His son, Mick, a dual premiership player with the Roos, paid a moving and public tribute to his ailing father last Friday when he wore the No. 30 jumper, sported by Bryan during his 73-game career with North Melbourne, instead of his own No. 4 against Richmond.

After the match, Mick waved the jumper at the Kangaroos cheer squad and kissed it in a sign of respect for his father. Bryan watched the match, and emotional aftermath, on television from his sickbed.

Last night, tributes were starting to flow for the former ruckman of the 1950s, known by all throughout his career as Skinny.

Kangaroos coach Denis Pagan lead those tributes, labelling Martyn a caring and generous man. "He was always worried about everybody else. He always had a warm greeting and I always enjoyed his company," Pagan said. "It is a very, very sad day. He was a true Shinboner."

Pagan said he would always have memories of Bryan standing on the terraces at Arden Street watching two of his sons, Steven and Mick, training with the under-19 team. "The way he supported his children, he just cared about everybody. The Martyn family are all quality people. One of the great things about the Martyn family was they were all so close and so united," said Pagan.

Last night, Kangaroos president Allen Aylett, also a former teammate, issued a statement on behalf of the club.

"For almost 60 years we have known Bryan Martyn as a fantastic and loyal stalwart of our club," said Aylett.

"Over the journey he gave outstanding service as a player, member and avid supporter of the Kangaroos.

"He was patriarch of the Martyn family, a family which typifies the North Melbourne spirit. It was fitting the Michael was able to wear his father's number in a well-earned victory over the Richmond Tigers on Friday night.

"It was also gratifying that Bryan was well enough to see the complete game on television and also see Michael kiss the guernsey at the end of the game.

"All of us at North Melbourne will miss having Bryan around and we wish the Martyn family all the best in this very trying time."

After being recruited from Kensington, Bryan Martyn played for North Melbourne between 1950 and 1958. He won the Syd Barker Trophy as the club's best-and-fairest in 1957 and represented Victoria.

Martyn is survived by his wife Mary, children Steve, Peter, John, Mick and Rosemary.

Details of the funeral service will be released later in the week.

Former North Melbourne player Bryan Martyn, the father of current full-back Mick, has passed away, following a battle with cancer. He died at 5pm on Sunday.

Mick Martyn traded his usual number four guernsey for his father’s number 30, when the Kangaroos defeated Richmond at Colonial Stadium last Friday night.

Kangaroos chairman Allen Aylett paid tribute to Bryan Martyn in a statement released by the club.
