Was just watching a replay for 2007 of the St Kilda draw... Skipper had a decent game in the ruck and up forward...

Showed he could take a grab when it mattered at the end there and finished off with a nice goal.

I know this is only one example but i think he is the kind of player we might need to give a go at some stage ...

He is a depth player but i think its unrealistic to think that Hudson and Minson can ruck for the whole season. Skipper needs to be brought in at some stage to give Huddo a rest.

In that game he actually rucked quite well and i think there are some weaker ruck combinations in the AFL that he suits rucking against (Carl, StK, Coll'w etc)

Ive been to a few of the preseason matches and he looks like a dud but if he was given more of an opportunity he could get his confidence up and find some form.

Nah hes rubbish. He has been given many chances over the years and has proved he cannot be a consistent performer at the top level.

Retained on the list purely as a ruck cover.

i agree , he is rubbish but were going to need huddo up and firing come finals time...

i dont think we can expect huddo to fire for 22-25 games...

You found the one of two good games he has played, the other against Geelong, he is a backup only.

Why doesn't he get played at Full Forward and get given a chance there like Will Minson does ?

Because quite simply he is hopeless, Minson is better ruckman and offers more as forward and doesn't stuff up as much as Skipper does (which is every second posession)

All Skipper lacks is confidence. As a third forward or second choice ruckman he is ok. He has hardly been given many opportunities as a forward.

He's been given plenty of chances at VFL to play the same ruck/forward role that Minson does in the AFL. He's just not up to it. Handy, ready made back up and might even get a game if injuries and team match ups dictate but he's not in our best 25 players.

He's just not quite AFL standard, he's shown glimpses but just can't put it together for more than a 1/4, a 1/4 there. Has obviously been kept on the list as a depth player so he will probably play 3-5 games this year depending on injuries.

Unless something dramatic happens for him this year, I think it will be his last on the list.

I don't mind having Skipper on our list. But I can't see the logic in having him on the list if the coaching staff have no faith in him and don't rate him as a player. It is purely a waste of a list spot.

Some people will say that he is needed as insurance in case one of our ruckmen goes down. I thought that is what the rookie list was for. If we are worried about the contingency of injuries to our ruckmen, just go out and rookie the best untried 28 year old ruckman in the country. Saves a list spot and money at the same time. But if you are going to have Skipper on the list, surely you need to play him at some stage. Otherwise it is just a waste of list space.

The problem for Skipper is that he has shown that his true position is ruck, but unfortunately, he is a midget for a modern ruckman.

He has been tried as a key forward and just does not measure up. Even at VFL level he struggles as a key forward, having been overshadowed by Podsiadly when at Werribee.

He has surely been retained just to cover until our young talls have time to develop.

I would suggest that Cordy despite his current light frame would more than match Skipper already in every facet of the game amd it is only the need to allow Cordy's body to develop that will get Skipper any game time in 2009. Roughead would be similarly assessed.

Having said that, I would be ecstatic if Skipper could prove me wrong and play an important part in a quality side.

This has been said a million times in the last 6 months. Skipper plays if Minson or Hudson go down. Imagine we make the grand final and Hudson does a hammy. Debut Roughead? lol.

He has played 2 good games
5 goals v geelong 2005
and played a good match against the saints.
i think we have given him a go

I'm quite a fan of the Skipper - although he should have been at the wheel when the "S.S. Minnow" hit that storm, rather than leaving it to poor old Gilligan.

Nonetheless, he has held his age remarkably well through the reruns, and to back up as an AFL ruckman posthumously is praiseworthy.

I believe a decent showing at Willi should see him at least get a few games at the top level, if only to maintain senior match fitness - as another poster suggested, no point burning Hudson out by playing every game. Play the Skipper against the weaker ruck combinations, or even give Minson a break and play the Skipper at FF for a game or two to see what happens. He is a good mark and kick, just seems to lose himself more in general play up the ground. Instructions for him would be the same as for the Eagle - "DON'T THINK... DO!!"

I think he needs 2 perform well at Williamstown for 4 or 5 games inorder 2 get a game with the dogs. Yes he does lack confidence, just an on and off player. Gr8 height, can kick the ball well but, needs 2 believe in himself. The dogs have enough talls as it is now. U got Jarrad Grant. Bugger me dead, when he made his debut against the bombers in preseason this yr 2009, he was bloody fantastic. Could run, tackle, mark BUT, couldnt kick ther ball 4 shit. Once he learns how 2 kick, we're laughing. Needs 2 bulk up 2. Then there is Jarrad Bouman. Can be another promising full forward down the track. And of course, cant forget Cordy and roughead.

Point is, we have plenty of ruckmen/talls. We need forwards. Thats where the doggies lack all the time. We have an awesome defence and midfield but, need a taller and stronger forward line.

Just with Big Will Minson, last yr he was fantastic. I use 2 always think big will was as useless as **** on a bull. But last yr in 2008, he played ruck well and full forward. Took big marks, ran fast for a big fella and kicked quite a few goals. Look out this yr 4 him. 2009 could be wills yr.

Are you with me? GO DOGS!

Is it possible for you to put together a comprehensible post?

Punctuation and txt tlk in the same sentences? George Orwell is rolling in his grave.

Sadly, this will be Skips last year. He will only get a game if either Hudson or Minson get injured or need a rest. Skip should be over taken this year by Shaw as our third ruck with Roughead and Mulligan waiting in the wings.

He is not a natural forward so he becomes a liability when he plays down there. We need quality more than we need height in our forward line.

Ayce and Roughy are probably ahead of Skipper already imo.

LoL. Leave me alone. Nothing ron with mi inglish... Ayce cordy needs 2 bulk up and we're right. Apparently his got the talent, moves well and takes good marks. Dont no wat his kicking is like. Gosh, the kid with his build can get snapped in 2.

Roughead should be playing now. He's rdy

We've got both Skipper and Wight in the same boat. Use em or lose em, they've both shown limited flashes over rtheir years in the club. Last year for both.

Well every year we have to get rid at least a couple players, and this year it will be Skipper and Wight. With the young talls we have coming through, there isn't much point retaining them for 2010.
