Football... Skippy’s last crack
Tuesday, 04 November 2008
Journalist: Peter Argent - Former Jack Oatey medallist, Crows footballer and Bendigo Bomber incumbent, Hayden Skipworth, will take up an offer by the Essendon Football Club’s coaching staff to do a pre-season at Windy Hill.
“There have been no promises made by Essendon’s coaching staff for me to be in the mix for their final selection in either the national or pre-season draft,” Skipworth explained.
“My thought processes are if nothing happens in either the national or pre-season draft, I’ll come back and play somewhere in the SANFL.
“This gives me an opportunity to be super fit coming in to the 2009 winter.”
Skipworth, who has been back in South Australia since the completion of the current season, has been seen in the Woodville-West Torrens gym facility working out alongside friend and former team-mate Ken McGregor.
After the devastation of a knee reconstruction early in 2007, Skipworth has been reasonably happy with his form during this season.
During the year he represented Victoria in a state level contest at Adelaide Oval, and his performances culminated in the Bendigo Bombers’ best and fairest award — the first of his senior career.
“Looking back, it has been a good year and I only missed two games during the season, the first and the last, but they weren’t due to the injury,” the 25-year-old on-baller said.
“Because Essendon had a crippling year with injury, this reflected also on the Bendigo side, which was devoid of many of the playing staff on the Essendon list. And we only won three games for the season.”
Along with playing in the VFL, Skipworth had a mentoring role with three young players living in the Essendon clubhouse, first year draftees David Myers and Tayte Pears, and second year player K. Reimers.
“I enjoyed the mentoring role, which was to fast-track the boys into understanding the AFL structures.
“Once I finish my football, I’d like to get involved in the AFL system in a development role or as a development coach.”
First priority for this YP football export is to leave no stone unturned in his quest to get back onto an AFL list.
Since first being drafted by Adelaide in 2000, then rookie listed in 2003, Skipworth played 44 games in the Crows tri-colours. One of the pinnacles of his career was as a key member of the Woodville-West Torrens SANFL premiership success in 2006.
