Football... Skippy’s last crack
Tuesday, 04 November 2008
Journalist: Peter Argent - Former Jack Oatey medallist, Crows footballer and Bendigo Bomber incumbent, Hayden Skipworth, will take up an offer by the Essendon Football Club’s coaching staff to do a pre-season at Windy Hill.

“There have been no promises made by Essendon’s coaching staff for me to be in the mix for their final selection in either the national or pre-season draft,” Skipworth explained.

“My thought processes are if nothing happens in either the national or pre-season draft, I’ll come back and play somewhere in the SANFL.

“This gives me an opportunity to be super fit coming in to the 2009 winter.”

Skipworth, who has been back in South Australia since the completion of the current season, has been seen in the Woodville-West Torrens gym facility working out alongside friend and former team-mate Ken McGregor.

After the devastation of a knee reconstruction early in 2007, Skipworth has been reasonably happy with his form during this season.

During the year he represented Victoria in a state level contest at Adelaide Oval, and his performances culminated in the Bendigo Bombers’ best and fairest award — the first of his senior career.

“Looking back, it has been a good year and I only missed two games during the season, the first and the last, but they weren’t due to the injury,” the 25-year-old on-baller said.

“Because Essendon had a crippling year with injury, this reflected also on the Bendigo side, which was devoid of many of the playing staff on the Essendon list. And we only won three games for the season.”

Along with playing in the VFL, Skipworth had a mentoring role with three young players living in the Essendon clubhouse, first year draftees David Myers and Tayte Pears, and second year player K. Reimers.

“I enjoyed the mentoring role, which was to fast-track the boys into understanding the AFL structures.

“Once I finish my football, I’d like to get involved in the AFL system in a development role or as a development coach.”

First priority for this YP football export is to leave no stone unturned in his quest to get back onto an AFL list.

Since first being drafted by Adelaide in 2000, then rookie listed in 2003, Skipworth played 44 games in the Crows tri-colours. One of the pinnacles of his career was as a key member of the Woodville-West Torrens SANFL premiership success in 2006.

Imo the delisting of Hislop was a good sign for "Skippy" however, Chris Johnson being delisted may have thrown a spanner in the works -- really doubt we would pick up two players in the PSD so if johnson somehow makes his way to the dons then probably bad luck skippy.

It's a big if though. Has Essendon stated any interest in Johnson?
More likely neither will end up on our list.

Please don't do it Essendon

I agree. I'm disappointed we missed Rodan a couple of years back but I just don't think Skipworth would cut it in '09. Tbh, I'd prefer to take a risk and bring another unproven 18 year old to the club instead of drafting Skipworth, he'd simply be a list filler.

Think that's what we'll end up with either way. It's gonna be hard to recruit good additions to our list, with the exception of our early picks of course, with so many delistings and retirements and no draft pick trades.

Don't think he'd add much football wise, and wouldn't be in our starting 22, but if the club thought that he could bring some leadership and direction for the young players then i wouldn't mind picking him up at pick 71 or in the PSD. He'd be a pretty good depth player and would be a much safer bet than an unproven 18 year old so late in the draft.

I think you are right Windas, if we can pick him up cheaply then it may benefit our young list as he played with many of them this year for Bendigo.

I'm with you on this, agreed.

yeh few years too late for skippy..its tough for him but yea hopefully he continues to lead for bendigo

He won't be back with Bendigo. If he is not drafted he will be heading back to SA.

Underated.

I hope you guys pick him up, both for Hayden's benefit and Essendon's. Honestly, he isn't a bad player, better than other players currently on AFL lists, besides he would add leadership to a young Essendon side, and really he is only 25, that isn't old at all. You likely aren't going to get a better player late in the draft or in the PSD, even then it would be a massive risk, with Skippy you know what you are going to get, a solid player with good leadership skills.

He was very, very unlucky to be delisted by the Crows, and subsequently not picked up.

It is my understanding that Essendon were going to draft him in 2007, prvided he had a good year at Bendigo that year. Sadly, the knee injury he got scuppered that move. But, he has had a full year at Bendigo in 2008 and performed more than admirably in a struggling side.

He has also acted as a mentor and house master to a couple of the Bomber youngsters (Reimers mongst them), so he's probably earned a fair bit of respect that way too. And so has been rewarded with a pre-season training trial with the club.

I have no reason to doubt why we wouldn't be seriously looking at taking him at this point - he's miles ahead of Chris Johnson in ability, experience and positional play.

Agreed, another Crows player who absolutely dominated in the SANFL, but couldn't crack it for a real run with the Crows.

I think he would be a very handy depth player, although I haven't seen him play since he left Adelaide...

Not quite true about never crackig it for a spot - played 20 games in 2005
In and out the next year, cut @ the end of the season (many think harshly)

Would definitely give us something. You'd have to balance off his known limitations against a youngster, where you don't know as much about either their ability now or their possible limitations.

I'm ambivalent
