He then joined Ron Barassi at North Melbourne and played a part in two premierships before following Barassi to Melbourne where he coached the Demon under 19's and reserves to premierships in the early 1980's.

Talking about the 1984 Reserves Grand Final win against Carlton he said "What was most satisfying was that we won the fight and more players reported. That hasn't happened for a long time at Melbourne".

I've updated that last page to show the years he was reserves/u19's coach (81-85)

Interestingly he had an offer to coach Sydney in '85 but we made him stay, so John Northey got the job instead. Then when Northey came in '86, Slug went to Essendon and coached their Under 19's.

He was Jimmy Stynes' first coach. He remembers him as being quite unrelenting on the training track. Won't forget his commentary of John Bourke whacking the umpire either.

I played under him when he was doing some coaching in the under 18's for a while.

Was a hard man with a foul mouth - but was probably the best teaching coach I played under.
