It's great isn't it. We've been watching it all evening as its got darker and darker. We're actually quite lucky for our generation(s) to have been able to see a few wonderful astral delights such as eclipses, Halleys, and other comets as well. I have also had the pleasure of witnessing the Aurora Australis once too, which was something I won't forget.

The view from my backyard.

I used my Sony SLR with zoom lense set to 300 and a 1/30 second exposure. I steadied the camera in the fork of a small tree.

I'm really glad you posted your thread MP because the pic doesn't do the live view justice.

ay ay ay, you pick on the smelter you pick on me...goddit? :D

Fire at Nyrstar Port Pirie lead smelter
Article from: The Advertiser

A FIRE at Port Pirie's Nyrstar lead smelter last night was brought under control with salt water because there was no fresh supply available.

Fourteen Metropolitan Fire Service firefighters took about two hours to contain the blaze, which started in the smelter's laundry about 7.30pm.

MFS spokeswoman Nicole Ely said the unusual move of using salt water was taken when firefighters could not access enough water through fire hydrants within the smelter's grounds.

Instead firefighters used hydrants outside the smelter which draw salt water from the Upper Spencer Gulf.

Nine employees were working at the time but were not in the laundry and escaped uninjured.

The fire damaged about 100,000sq m of floor space but did not spread to other areas of the million-dollar smelter.

The damage bill is estimated at $200,000.

Fire cause investigators will travel from Adelaide to Port Pirie to establish the cause of the blaze.

I prefer smiley face fritz.

better than smiley face devon :thumbsd:, stupid interstaters

and yes toots seeing it outside was great, i couldn't believe how big it looked. was good seeing it in mannum without all the city lights. One thing i did notice was there didn't seem to be any stars near it, it was pitch black all around it. I have a friend with a telescope which he hooks up to his laptop and takes pics will have to see if he got any good shots

Great pic Toots :thumbsu:

i wish i had your camera, my pics are all blurry, should probably invest in a tripod too.
For long exposure pics when I don't have a tripod handy I position the camera on anything handy, a small tree in Toot's case but chairs and tables work just as well, and use the self timer function so you are not touching the camera when the "shutter" opens.
