Posted: Thu Dec 28, 2006 10:04 am Post subject: Graham Smorgon to come on-line Tuesday 2 JanuaryOn Tuesday 2nd January, Graham Smorgon is going to come on-line and answer our questions.

Some of you will recall that I wrote an e-mail to Graham, and he took the time to respond, and one of the points he raised was that our club has been behind in terms of communicating with supporters. Interestingly, he read my e-mail on 'Talking Carlton' before he got a copy from the club, so our opinions are heard more than we sometimes realise.

Now he wants to take this a step further, and address the issues raised by us directly.

This is an excellent opportunity to get answers to those questions that have been bugging us, straight from the top of the club, and is an example of how the administration can further embrace the on-line community and its concerns. This may also encourage others running for the board to use this forum, if they can see that we are responsible, and don't get feral.

Graham plans to be on-line from 7.30pm until 9.00pm, and will come to TC in the future as well.

Beforehand, I'll let you know Graham's member name, and I'll set up the thread.

it would be nce to speak to him but unfortunately i think the conversation could get feral as well as stupid questions. i think the thread should be open to a select 10 or so that are trusted intelligent individuals. just my opinion but yeah i'd love to see it more often.

They (talkigncarlton) have someone who is on the recruiting board, so i think perhaps he may play a hand in it? Who knows.

However, i'm sure all questions will be put up beforehand, and then a few will be selected.

Totally agree Effes but I reckon that the way certain people on there are directing questions to GS is pretty poor. He's putting himself out there to answer questions and clearly some people over there are trying to railroad him.

I think he's doing a pretty good job at answering the questions.

That's probably a fair enough comment. But Smorgon, and other board members have been reading TC (and other Carlton online forums presumably) for some months, according to Smorgon himself. So I dare say he would have known what he was getting himself into. As mods we've tried to do as best we can to coordinate the inevitable free for all questions. bluechucky has done a great job compiling the list of questions together, and for the most part, the thread has run reasonably smoothly given there's plenty of people asking questions and only one answering them.

Yeah, i totally agree bc. As i said Smorgon has done a terrific job tonight and answered in in clear and bulls*#t free way. At least he is putting himself and his ideas out there for everyone to see, which is more than can be said for his challengers.

The only problem is we needed it over a couple of sessions that were specific topic related..

1 - board, financial discussions etc

2 - player / player contract / membership discussions etc

I realise some inter relate, but to ask some less heated questions was hard as the more heated questions (which needed to be asked) were taking up the time.

Interesting exercise - should be finished now.

I did just read the thread after being given a heads up he was on, certainly an interesting exercise. Whatever you think of GS and the job he's doing you have to applaud him for at least trying to communicate more effectively with members. Most clubs could do a lot more in this regard and I'll be interested to see if GS keeps it up after the election.

Some interesting points but most questions posed IMO were never going to be answered honestly in a public forum - and I'm not sure you'd want them to be. If I was a voting member I would be disappointed in the lack of detail moving forward more so than answers to what's happened in the past.

Seems that the decision for Carlton members will be who you trust more. The "trust me I know what I'm doing" vs. "trust us because we love Carlton". Not an enviable position as it stands.

Hopefully the last few years we as a supporter base have woken up to the fact that we should always question our leaders and make them accountable at all times.

I'll divorce myself from that, thanks anyway. All I knew about Elliot was that he was boorish and inflammatory. I had a problem with him opening his mouth, against our opponents and against our players after games. I voiced my opinion about wanting him to shut his mouth. Anything else, finances. validity of the grandstand etc, was all in the dark for me. There was no football news in Queensland aside from the Bears/Lions back then.

If others feel they saw the writing on the wall and followed JE off the cliff, then so be it. I'm just not sure that we all should be tarred with the same brush.
