At the start of next season we will have the following.

King 31
Gardiner 30
Hayes 30
Milne 30
Baker 29-30
Blake 29-30
Kosi 27
Fisher 27
Riewoldt 27
Montagna 27

I not really feeling it. We looked very good yesterday but a year is a long time.

Who do we develop? Are these 27yos going to be able to make it to another grand final?

Bewilders me that Riewoldt and Kosi are both 27. For some reason I thought they were ALOT younger than that.

I think you need to top up but still hang onto your first 2 picks of the draft. At this stage you need

1 back pocket - Maybe Nicoski from us...
1 more HFF - Someone better than Milne. Nathan Eagelton now Doggies are letting him go wouldnt be crazy. Still has 2 years in him
1 more hard nut midfielder - ie. David Armitage to be blooded.

2 more years left for you guys I think

We develop. armo, steven, geary, simpkin.

Max retires, baker should retire (mistakenly heard Baker was to retire for those who think with their asses), Milne should not be automatic selection (as Max wasnt). Hard decision on Raph.

We need tweaking, not rebuilding. The rest of that list are required.

You still have a couple of years provided you have another good run with injuries.

Rebuilding is going to be difficult at the moment so if anything I can only see you trading for more players to top up your list for a flag next year.

Actually... Reiwoldt and Kosi are a week short of their 27th birthday... NOW. They are effectively 28 next year by the time the season is well and truly underway.

The premiership window officially shut last night. Remember the window has really been open since 2005 when you should have beaten Sydney in a prelim.... so it's not like the window has just begun. Most teams only have 4 years to crack it. St Kilda are GORN and it's going to be a very very long time before they are even close to challenging for a premiership.... with the draft being the way it is.

I'm starting to fear our Premiership window is closing.

Ablett and Bartel were much younger men than some of our stars when they won their first flag and are now dual premiership Brownlow players and still younger than Riewoldt.

Full rebuild might be required. Can't give up hope but things don't look good.

We'll see. Don;t think you get on the veterans list at 28!

Why on earth would you rebuild when your flag window is still open? Until you know it's closed, go for the flag. Surely the dumbest thread of the year.

Complete and utter bollocks. There is no way of knowing if the window will close next year. But while you have a list that finished top of the ladder and 2 kicks away from glory, it would be foolish to dismantle it and rebuild. There may just be another chance so there's no point rubbing that out until it's known.

Your core playing group is at their prime you do NOT rebuild while your in that stage of progress 2009 is the work/effort from 2005 onwards, you tweak and top up on retirements and go hard again next season and hope for a little luck no reason why you can't make the GF next year.

My thoughts is you have team right now. Kicking straight and back yourself in the last qtr then you'd have a flag.

I think keep the side mostly but don't top up as you don't need too. Make sure you use all your picks knowing you have time to develop time.

Lol as you said, we're going to lose maybe Max and King. One barely played, and the other was just about pushed out of the team by a 20 year old.

Until the likes of Lenny, Dal, Joey, Roo and Kosi begin to retire we're sweet.

But when that does happen. :|

We're very reliant on the crop of 2000-2001 drafts, so evidently around 2013-2014 we're gonna lose a lot of our (current) best 22.

We've drafted very well in the past couple years though, I'm confident we can keep it going and will not need to bottom out to rebuild.

We've seen enough wooden spoons.

Raph Clarke = scrap heap.

Can't play. You're better off going and getting Brett Jones from west Coast for next to nothing. He can play if he's surrounded by a good team with disciplined structures.

Also, you need one more mid. No point drafting a kid who won't come good until your window is closed. You need to cough up pick #16 for a mid.

Priddis maybe.
Go offer 16 to Richmond for Cousins. He'll win you the flag.
Thomas from North?
Josh Hill?

you need another key defender, i couldnt help but think that if you had tarrant in your line up yesterday instead of dawson, you would have won. window is still well and truly open :thumbsu:

You know how many times just before the finals i thought that gee we could really use Cousins right now,
He could have been the difference, but we didnt want him. Tuf t***ies.

And Raph reminds me of Jason Daniels.

May be proved wrong but that was not acceptable yesterday.

We had a good key defender sitting in the grandstand by the name of Max Hudghton. Should have played ahead of either Raph Clarke or Dawson, probably would have prevented a couple of goals that were gifted from their mistakes. Unfortunately he won't be there next year though.

As for rebuilding, I don't think it's necessary just yet. Most of our list is still young enough to be around for the next few years. Hopefully a few of our younger players such as McEvoy, Lynch, Heyne, Geary & Steven will step up next year and improve our team as well.

rebuild? lol no... this is the start of the true 3 year window.

we top up now the drafts are shit and bottomw out in 3-4 yrs time.

stupid thread, still have a great list..

Max and king to retire, and possibly time for milne to step aside too i think.

Start playing lynch and heyne forward, we need more half forwards who can kick goals from around 50.

Beware Embers' advice. It is usually dodgy ... I mean honestly, Nikoski would have been buried alive out there yesterday.

And Nathan Eagleton? There's a reason the Dogs are moving him on.

Saints are well placed next year. You've got some depth (as the game against Hawthorn showed) and it's a question of how these guys are brought into the team.

Everitt from the WB might be on the table for your first rounder. He'd be handy - provide some extra options in the forward line, back line and on ball.

Lovett might be handy but you'd need to give the Bummers a reasonable player in return.

But Nikoski ... had to laugh.

No way do we rebuild.

Our list is getting older but the window is open for the next 3 years. This is our time and we go hell for leather in trying to win a flag.

Over the next 2-3 years the Bulldogs will have a key forward. Hawthorn will return (Franklin and Roughhead are 4 years younger than Roo and Kosi) and Carlton's isn't far off challenging. We blew it this year. Geelong was the only real challenger in 2009. Everything went right for us and we may need another dream run with injuries to challenge again. But the list is good enough for another 3 years.

two words:

Brian lake.

Sit the group down and ask them how serious they are about winning the flag and would they give up 5% of their salary to get a flag. Zac Dawson is probably the only person who will say no.

Then take all that money in a wheel barrow to Brian Lake's house. Sign him up.
