Winning the flag is the ultimate thrill from footy but flags can be very elusive entities as the Dogs,Saints and until very recently the Swans,Cats and Pies have shown us.
I have always said that having your team playing finals and being there with a real chance is what gives most satisfaction with flags being the icing on the cake.
I have done this fantasy exercise previously on the forum and again I present the results from an imaginary 18 team competition for the first 100 years of its existence.
I used a tool to generate 100 random numbers between 1 and 18 to represent the imaginary 100 premiers in a competition with an unbiased draw, draft and salary cap in place, grand finals at a neutral venue and no travel disadvantages for any team.
Even so,the very rich team R with apparently it's 125,000 members, many corporate sponsors and it's annual update of training facilities, overseas altitude training laid on etc.etc look to have streeted all the others with 14 flags while poor struggling hapless team B only get 2....oh well maybe the level playing field is just a pipe dream.
The results:
R...14 FLAGS
N...9
C...7
F...7
G...7
A...6
I...6
K...6
L...6
O...6
E...4
M...4
P...4
D...3
H...3
J...3
Q...3
B...2
Some observations:
After 30 years 4 clubs had not won a flag.
After 40 years it was 3.
After 50 years still 2 had no flag and 4 only had 1...shades of Collingwood 1959 to 2009.
After 60 years still one club flagless with 5 more years to wait for the great day.
So Lions fans, enjoy it when we make the finals again.
