SOFT ****ERS

3 weeks ago our club got ahead of itself. We were lucky Richmond rolled over and died when we kicked a couple in the 2nd qtr of that game. You didn't have to look very closely to see how cocky the players had become after our first 5 wins.

Downhill skiers.

i think it is more that 3 quarters of the team are out of form and we need to reward players who are playing well in the SANFL.

calling a team cocky after 2 losses is very easy to do i thought the Richmond performance was ruthless getting control and not letting the opposition back in the game.

You've got to wonder why jenkins is so soft. He looks pretty built. Then again isnt that why essendon didnt want him? Look at sloane, much smaller physique yet hes tough as nails. It must be some kind of mental thing.

it could be to do with his personality.

It would be nice if the leadership group.... well lead
It looks like our leadership group are mentally soft

And how the hell does Lynch get a role in there

I've long thought that Lynch might be a bit of a downhill skier. Barometer or downhill skier, it's a fine line and not worth the argument.

It's everything to do with personality. Some people are more inclined to be a hard nut, while others (Jenkins) are more of the soft **** wimp variety.

Simples.

Are we the most bruise-free side in the competition? GC probably the only ones who trump us in that regard.

Even when we win by lots, we don't exactly play with much physicality.

NO we won the first 6 games by winning the hard ball which allow us to get our outside game going.

I actually called them cocky 3 weeks ago to be honest.

It's an AFC culture thing. I was concerned prior to the Melbourne game as we historically don't fair well against teams who play unsociable football, hence our finals record.

Sauce had hit outs but how many to advantage?

Fair point.
Most press stats have him @ 74 hit-outs in total, which is real dominance, yet we were beaten at the clearances.
Melbourne's mids read the ball off Sauce very well ( = focus + intensity) and were quick to tackle our mids who received the ball from a tap. Melbourne often won the clearance from second- and third-efforts and from ruck contests after tackles. Sloane is our toughest inside midfielder who appears to get the ball from impossible situations, hard in the contest, but he was tagged out of it by Vince with the support of other Melbourne players keen to harass and unsettle Sloane. None of the outside midfielders (maybe Laird the exception) were prepared to get in at the ball, to get down and dirty.
However, I believe strongly that this thread could have been more than just negative --- it's titled "soft ******S" but without explanation or constructive criticism --- by offering some solutions eg
--- Sloane needs to find ways to overcome his soon-to-be-weekly tag
--- his teammates need to block and harass and discourage the others who come in to blunt Sloane's game
or maybe some positional, tactical or personnel changes. eg
NM and the Dees had up to 3 players extra in our backlines, yet our mids continued to bomb the ball in high to crowded marking contests which is really dumb, DUMB football when there are so many people back there. To compound that problem more than one of our tall forwards (Walker, Lynch, Jenkins, Otten) contested the marking contest. When the ball spilled we were outnumbered and (even worse) out-muscled and out-pressured by their numbers, giving Betts little chance.
The Crows best game is to push back to help our defenders, leaving almost a "Pyke's paddock" forward of centre with at the most one or two one-on-one contests (Walker + defender, Jenkins + defender, Betts and defender). When that happens we (well, we used to) have great run and carry through the midfield and either kick to leading forwards or get out behind their defence.

Walker is the king of down hill skiers, goes the push when things don't go his way. Flat track bully.

To be fair Tex has also proven himself a big game player and won us numerous important games, including finals, which is more than can be said for most of the team...

Have to agree with this.

I can tolerate him not tackling much or chasing well because he's very slow but I just wish he would attack the aerial contest with more effort and courage. Does he still worry about his knee? I've seen him crash packs previously but it's a rare event these days. Even one on one he looks timid and worried about his opponent, looks awful.

Still a matchwinner, just cringe at his contested stuff sometimes.
