solo careers

I was trying to think of some singers who had a successful solo career after leaving a successful band. The only ones I could think of are Robbie Williams and Van Morrison and, to a lesser extent, Annie Lennox.

Anyone else?

Peter Gabriel (ex-Genesis)

There has been a few others but this is the most obvious one I can think of. Especially in terms of both a successful group/solo career.

John Farnham - Little River Band, although that was after a solo career was started, he still survived it.

Jimmy Barnes - Cold Chisel.

Beyonce.

Emma Bunton (to some extent, I suppose)

Sophie Monk (to some extent)

Tori Amos. Although not entirely mainstream, anyone who went from this:

Deserves a bloody medal if you ask me :D.

She was originally in 'Y Kant Tori Read'. Most of the guitar work was done by Steve Farris, who was a member of Mister Mister (hahah anyone remember the song 'Broken Wings'). The drummer was Matt Sorum, who is now the drummer for Guns 'N' Roses.

Paul Simon.

Johnny Thunders (of the New York Dolls).

Iggy Pop (of the Stooges).

Roger Waters (of Pink Floyd).

It depends how successful you mean...Johnny Rotten & a couple of the Ramones have had moderatley successful solo outings, compared to the not-so successful Sid Vicious solo album:D

Again, depends how successful you mean.

Apart from thos above, trying to think ... Jon Bon Jovi is only other one I can think of, offhand. he did ok solo, and is still going, I think.

Some did a little but not a lot, like Gerry Harrison (Talking Heads), Mike Rutherford (Genesis), Diana Ross (Supremes, right? ... well, she did well).

Jon Bon Jovi is still going, but not solo.He only ever released the one solo album.

Another one who was successful in the early to mid 90's was James Reyne [Aust Crawl].
You could technically chuck in Diesel [Johnny Diesel & The Injectors].

The logical answer would have to be Michael Jackson.

Most other people live off the songs that were big in their bands. Eg Sting, Jimmy Barnes.

Robbie's a bid one nowaday's even though I don't like him much.

Disagree there. Both have had several number one albums of original material after going solo.

From memory, I think Jimmy Barnes had his first four or five solo albums rocket to number 1. More success in terms of sales than he ever had with Cold Chisel, who were pretty huge in their own right.

Sting doesn't do too badly for himself either in that regard, and his music of the last 10-15 years doesn't have all that much in common with what he did as part of The Police.

Iguess so but if were at a Barnsey concert I would think most people would be hanging out for Khe Sahn and Choir Girl, and they'd be played at a strategic time as well.

Same with Sting, we'd all put up with new stuff to hear "every step you take" "walking on the moon" or "message in a bottle" And he'd play them, that's why people come.

Rod Stewart (The Faces & The Small Faces).

Ed Kuepper (The Saints)

Eric Clapton (Cream)

David Lee Roth (Van Halen)

Bjork (The Sugarcubes)

Gloria Estefan (Miami Sound Machine)

Russell Morris (Somebody's Image)

Bryan Ferry (Roxy Music)

Billy Thorpe (The Aztecs)

Ozzy Osbourne (Black Sabbath)

Daryl Braithwaite (Sherbet)

There are plenty of others !!

Off on a slight tangent... Ritchie Blackmore left Deep Purple and assembled Rainbow in 1975, and they became quite successful especially in Germany and Japan (where all true quality metal and hard rock seems to fire).

There's also Rob Halford leaving Judas Priest and forming Fight, and then Halford, and having huge success there.... NOT !!!

The question was successful solo careers. One or two hit songs like some of the ones listed does not constitute a successful solo career.
