Some positives and some negatives

Ah how bout we crowd his space with more than 1 fricken player and also Brown physically is a better match up, Maxwell struggles to beat 3rd string forwards most weeks. So i got a great idea lets see how he goes 1 out with the leading goal kicker and to help we will send our flanks to hf line so he has the whole 50 arc end sarcasm.

Coach didn't help Maxwell but seriously enough with the Maxwell defending he ISN'T up to it.

Brown got carved up against Buddy earlier in the year, doesn't have the pace to go with him. Plus Brown struggled against Roughhead, who is he's better match up in my opinion. I know why people don't rate Maxwell, but **** me, tonight's game wasn't anywhere near his worst. Plenty of players should be called out before him based on tonights game.

And you raise a good point which I posted in another thread - leaving Buddy 1 on 1 with an empty forward 50 was asking for trouble.

Following is a run down of some of Collingwood's issues.

- Thomas still can't kick
- Cloke still can't kick
- 75% of our team still can't kick
- The skill level in general is average
- The decision making is average
- We have a love affair with the interchange wing as the majority of our play goes via that way (must be for even quicker interchanges). Contrary to that the centre square is sacred land which musn't be touched.
- They chip the ball around too much (last penetrating kick was in 2003)
- The ruck division (including Fraser) is sh!t
- The coaching is at times bewildering

Apart from all this things are going great guns.

Great post. Can't argue with any of that.

Lewis is a jet and definitely under-rated...but to our benefit, so great....

All is not lost for the pies, I sincerely hope you guys get your act together and win the next 4 games to cause some severe damage in the finals, you are a much better performed team than the one that played tonight.

Good luck for the next month...

You can thank the pies for Lewis. They swapped you pick 7 for pick 10 and the pies got Chris Egan and love-child Chad Morrison. That was after we'd wasted pick 10 the year before on Richard Cole.

We still have Fraser, R Shaw, Davis, Johnson and O'Bree from the 2000 draft.

From 2001, Didak, Lonie and Wakelin remain.

From the drafts in 2002, 2003 and 2004, only Swan and Heath Shaw are at the club - 2 out of 16 picks. These are three wasted years that have now come back to bite the club hard. Picks wasted on players that I don't think attracted much, if any, attention of recruiters at other clubs.

Didn't his opponent kick 8, and could have kicked 12?

It's not his fault he's too small but he too often not only gets beat but gets absolutely thrashed!

I think you get confused because Maxwell is last player you see before Buddy takes the mark. The delivery to Buddy and Roughhead was excellent all night. I'd look further upfield for any fall guys here. Who was marking their mids?
That is what makes it exceptionally hard on any backman.
Add to this the fact that Maxwell is smaller in height, weight and strength and you have all the ingredients for a major mismatch. Given the circumstances Maxwell did well on Buddy. He backed himself in most contests and played in front, as he should, managing to effect the spoil or take Buddy out of the contest quite a few times.
There were many more ahead of Maxwell in the "did not play well" ranks.

If Cloke and Medhurst had 50% of the delivery Buddy and Roughhead had we would have won.

At the end of the day we lost the game in the 1st after again "sleeping" through an entire first quarter.
This is our single biggest issue. Ahead of any individual's performance.
If we cannot start a game with at least a hint of urgency we are doomed to fail.

In addition to poor starts, fade outs in the last quater are also hurting us pretty badly.

I think you have precisely summed up our current diemma in a couple of sentences

Only managed to catch the game from midway through the 2nd quarter onwards, but these would be my positives, since i'm sure there're already enough posts on negatives.

Positives:
- Pendlebury played fantastic.
- Heath Shaw played well in the same role that BJ had in 2006.
- Maxwell beat Franklin one-on-one (for those playing at home) from midway through the 2nd onwards (i.e. from the time I was watching).
