and we continue to have 1870 on our game banner to show the afl and the other supporters our heritage.

There were a lot of comments on it being on the banner for the showdown - all positive.

We cheer squad/supporter club members that made the banner were rather proud of the response to it.

1870 is also the number plate on the float for pre match.

There is no easy answer and one I am sure the back room boys have been struggling over for the last 10 years.

Maybe a small ''est1870'' on the collar of the jumper ie the FFC on the neck of the Doggies jumper, or even just the 1870 on its own, with the 1870 on its own you can still reference your heritage ie '' from the parklands of suburban Adelaide to the lofty heights of the SANFL and now into the AFL the long tradition of excellence continues which symbolises the Port Adelaide FC'' *

You can utilise the 1870 as a brand name and sell clothing with that on it in the FUBU/Dotti style , those who cherish the history will know and appreciate, those who want to know will ask, no need for sledgehammers, just a slight aside that keeps the door open for questions

* PM me for details on where to send consultancy fee :D

Sorry too late. Similar suggestions have been made and the club has knocked them back on the basis that putting some sort of recognition around the back collar area of the guernsey is viewed as honouring the dead, which the PAFC definitely isn't.

No fee for you, come back in one year ;)

yes thats ackowledging our heritage, but i dont think any of that you suggest is going to result in any increased memberships - it will make all of us feel good, no doubt, but thats about it.

It's time for the club to stand up on this one and not go the way of the Brisbane Lions.

When Fitzroy and the Brisbane Bears merged they set up a new entity not called the Brisbane Football Club Ltd, but the Brisbane Lions Football Club Ltd. Lions is not only their nickname but part of their full name to signify an equal merger, which in reality for most Fitzroy fans was a takeover.

The AFL for the following seasons, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000 counted games played by Voss, Black Lynch etc for the Brisbane Lions FC as seperate to games they played for Brisbane FC. If you have the AFL yearbooks you will see this. However, before the start of the 2001 footy season, the AFL's official statistican Col Hutchinson, had a whinge that it was too hard to keep stats for Alistar Lynch because he was recorded as playing games for Fitzroy, Brisbane and Brisbane Lions and pushed for all of Brisbane's and Brisbane Lions' records to be merged. The AFL management team and I guess commission approved this change. Another slap in the face to Fitzroy fans.

So the AFL have history of ignoring club''s wishes. They have set about getting rid of the formed in 1870 for several years. In the AFL year books for the 1997, 98 and 99 seasons they stated;
Founded 1870
Joined AFL 1997

Between 2000 and 2005 they stated just, Joined AFL 1997.

In the 2006 and 2007 yearbook they state;
Club Formed 1996
Joined AFL 1997

Intetersing massaging by the AFL between the words Founded and Formed.

In some respects it doesn't matter. We have our football team playing in the highest league possible, the aim Fos started pushing 50 years ago. But the club has to fight for it's history and publicly state it, not always buckle to what the AFL want.

The AFL are a joke, they confuse themselfs. In the Footy record done by the AFL on the club page it states club formed in 1870.

On 14th December 1994, the SANFL President, Max Basheer, announced that the PAFC was the successful tenderer for South Australia’s second AFL sub-license
Never ceases to amaze me how a club that didn't even exist until 1996 was not only able to tender for an AFL license in 1994 but was successful against clubs like Norwood and Sturt which were formed in 1878 and 1901 respectively :rolleyes:

I'd actually say that this year has been the best in regards to our club's history and official AFL publications (not officially approved AFL items which is another kettle of fish altogether)

In the official 'AFL Record Guide to Season 2007' which is supposedly the competition bible released each year it says.....

Club formed: Port Adelaide FC formed May 13, 1870; joined SANFL 1877; AFL club incorporated 1996.
Joined AFL: 1997
which is the real history..............and better than the past where it has had printed what you had above.

Also the club website is probably the best in regards to history since Telstra took over running it........well when it's working as the AFL sites were down for a while earlier today.

the History Page says:-

The Port Adelaide Football club is arguably the most successful senior football club, not only in South Australia but Australia-wide.

Since playing our first game on 24 May, 1870 the club has gone on to win an Australian record of 34 SANFL premierships including six in a row and achieve the honour of being Champions of Australia on four occasions.

In 1997 the club reached another landmark in its history by joining the country’s national competition – the Australian Football League..............

The page also has links to other PAFC pre-AFL history including:-

* Honour Roll
* Greatest Team
* Life Members
* Club Records

So in some ways the AFL is recognising things more but they need to be more prudent in regards to the people making money selling 'official afl products' as all clubs have some dodgy stuff in that area.

I apologise to the AFL and to others for my mistake. I had made notes up until 2006 and assumed I had seen the same thing as 2006 in the 2007 AFL year book. This year's yearbook as you pointed out dk actually states the correct FULL position for the first time. Mea Culpa
