Now, I'm not normally one to divulge in any of this sort of stuff, but because the source was so good, I couldn't pass up sharing some insights. I won't be revealing the source, but I had a good, half hour chat today with the mother of an ex-Demon player who left during this millenium. I won't reveal who, so don't bother asking.

But I just chatted to her about the club (she's still a one eyed Demon), and she revealed to me that alot of player retirements, and players leaving the club, have been down to one man:

Neale Daniher. Now, I won't divulge the information as such, because I don't feel comfortable, but apparently behind the scenes the guy is a bit of an a**hole, and alot of players didn't like him at all. They were some big name players too, one of whom ended up leaving because of him, and heading back to WA.

But I think it asks the question - do we keep the man on? Does he have enough respect with the playing group or not?

Believe me if you want, I'm not terribly fussed here, but I have no reason to make this up, and neither does the lady I spoke too (her son, she says, left on actual good terms).

What do you guys think? Surprised? Shocked? Already knew? It's an interesting thought, none the less.

Well I know a current player (won't be at the club next year though) quite well, and his entire family aren't exactly keen on ND.

The Ox is known to be in the same boat as well.

At the end of the day the man has got us into 5 finals series, so whilst he may not be popular with all the players, he's doing a reasonable job.

I'm guessing the son is the great Ox?

Regardless though, I have said for the past 2 years that this club's greatest downfall is Daniher. He is not a premiership coach, he is incapable of developing a decent list (8 years on, and we still don't have a premiership list) and he has his favorites.

You only have to look at Saturday's decision to play Heffernan, to understand why this man has no clue.
I'm sure he is a lovely man, but he is doing more damage than good at this club.

GET RID OF HIM!

That's true. Not everyone can get on with the coach, and if it were really bad, he would have been gone by now. But then what I was told doesn't surprise me, even if it may have been tainted a touch in places.

But I guess it just raises the question of Danners and his approach. He probably get's on with 80-85% of the list, but one Grand Final appearance in 8 years?

We've done fukall since 2000. '02, '04 and '05 were better than average but we never look like premiership contenders. I wouldn't necessarily call for him to get the arse but I'd love to see what a different coach would do with our squad.

I've heard the same thing. One of my mates who is a Demon supporter knows the mother of an ex-Demon who is probably the one you are talking about and I heard the same story.

If even 30% of the players don't like him there he should go. We can't have this type of thing when we are trying to develop what is already a very talented list.

I think he has come on in leaps and bounds with his persona. This inturn has brought lots of members etc. FANTASTIC!

Only problem is i still want to see the demons win a premiership and i dont see it happening under Danners. Let him be a spokesperson for the club and give the job to someone who can see what is wrong with us. (Eg Malcolm Blight, Garry Lyon)

Another year, another big chance, another dissapointment

Banging on about how c rap danners is ain't gonna change anything. if you think he will be sacked you are wrong. If we sacked him I would never buy another membership - not because I'm in love with danners but because it would cost us a c rap load of cash and we simply can't afford it. The AFL are already using us as a hand puppet and they would not be happy if we wasted $700k+ on sacking a coach who has made 5/8 finals series and made a grand final in his eight years (which is the AFL average). I'm getting sick of people bagging danners on all our fan sites - take a look at some of the pi$$ weak players who have no heart and aren't prepared to bleed for their huge salries not danners.

Oh! A good job. ND has a 49% winning ratio in his career.

Half suspected this for sometime now. I really thought that the players weren't responding to ND. 8 years is a long time - just hope the guy doesn't ruin us. Perhaps maral might be the real reason for our loosing streaks.

A 10 year contract with no premiership... fair enough.
At least his winning ratio is up to standard

Honestly, honouring him with contract extentions is a classic example of how the MFC rewards absolute ******** and mediocrity.

He has done it all, including develop a list to his liking, and yet we are still struggling. Give it up Melbourne, he's not our next premiership coach!

So that averages out to an 11-11 record each year? And that's including 2003 where we obviously tanked for Colin and Brock (remember Cameron Hunter was getting a game!).

He needs a Premiership (or get bloody close to one) pretty soon though.

Or at least show we are consistently capable of making it. He needs to find a way to get them mentally ready for f*cks sake. They haven't been like that since he started.

I loved it when Hunter got a game, it was hilarious to see him out there! I'd say, however, that if he doesn't get one in the next 2 years, he's gone. He just can't get another extension.

He rated our list as 7-8 this year which was a fair assesment, early season form raised expectations but to lose 8 out of the last 11 and 7 in a row must raise some questions.

I'm not sure how much more another coach would have got out of our list but 06 has to be his last chance. Anything short of a top 4 h & a finish and a prelim final will be a failure.

In relation to the original topic, coaching is not a popularity contest. I would applaude the appointment of satan himself if it ultiately lead to preimiership success.

Well we are the Demons after all.

My brother went to a club function and said Danners was a really nice bloke. I heard Yze could not stand him though and if I had a choice out of keeping Yze or Daniher. Yze would win hands down.
