SEGA® America, Inc. and SEGA® Europe Ltd., today announced details of Sonic Generations™, the highly anticipated video game title in development to celebrate Sonic the Hedgehog’s 20th Anniversary. Delivering the definitive gaming experience for Sonic fans old and new, Sonic Generations™ sees Sonic the Hedgehog playable as both the much loved classic 1991 character, and the modern day video game hero he has become in this exciting new fast paced adventure. Sonic Generations™ will speed into stores for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system for Holiday 2011.

Set across three defining eras from 20 years of Sonic the Hedgehog video game history, the instantly recognizable environments of Sonic Generations have been re-built in stunning HD and are now playable in both classic side scrolling 2D from 1991, as well as modern 3D style found in Sonic’s most recent adventures. Each incarnation of Sonic in Sonic Generations comes complete with his trademark special move, Spin Dash and Spin Attack for Classic Sonic, and the Homing Attack and Sonic Boost for Modern Sonic. An innovative new interactive menu system allows for complete immersion in Sonic’s universe with favorite characters and hidden treasures gradually being revealed throughout the game.

“Sonic Generations will certainly be a fitting celebration for Sonic’s 20th Anniversary,” commented David Corless, Global Brand Director for Sonic. “By having the classic 1991 Sonic that many fans know and love team up with his modern day incarnation, we are bringing back the nostalgia of the early days of Sonic and combining it with the innovation and stunning HD technology of the modern gaming era. Sonic Generations will bring to life the last twenty years of Sonic’s universe in a truly unique and imaginative way.”

Sonic’s universe is thrown into chaos when a mysterious new power creates ‘time holes’ which pull him and his friends back through time. As a result, he encounters some surprises from his past history including Classic Sonic, Sonic as he was in 1991. Modern Sonic and Classic Sonic must defeat this strange new enemy, save their friends, and find out who really is behind this diabolical deed...

Re: Sonic Generations - Holy shit this looks awesome!

Was just wondering if i should make a thread on this :p

game looks excellent, was a HUGE sonic fan back in the day and still play the classics from time to time. They should've never screwed around with sonics design, classic sonic >>>> modern "boost through entire level and shimmy to the left and right a couple of times to finish stage" sonic

Im hoping the story line has modern sonic being killed, damn tall, skinny, green eyed freak :D:thumbsu:

Re: Sonic Generations - Holy shit this looks awesome!

Looks good but can't get my hopes up with their recent track record. Sonic Colours was a step in the right direction, but not quite there. All they need to do is make Sonic Adventures 3 and i'll be happy.

Although Sonic 4 was OK.

Sonic colors broke the cycle apparently (didnt play much of it so cant comment) Unleashed would've been awesome if it was just sonic stages, those were fun

Re: Sonic Generations - Holy shit this looks awesome!

Demo up on store for the next 18 days (timed demo seems odd) Get to play Green Hill as classic sonic. physics feel slightly off when jumping from platform to platform but everything else is great (a couple of glitches but its a work in progress so i'm sure they'll be ironed out) the 1 button spin dash is a nice addition and lets you spin dash on the fly as opposed to stopping and holding down and jump (that option is still there btw)

I grew up on Sonic so this is a must by for me, cant wait

Colors was shit.

Re: Sonic Generations - Holy shit this looks awesome!

Very short demo, just the one level. I haven't really played a Sonic game since I was little (except for the Mega drive collection). Basically I just held square and the demo was finished in two minutes, oh well. No idea why it's a timed demo either, especially for something so easy and quick to finish.

Re: Sonic Generations - Holy shit this looks awesome!

What would have made the demo better is if you could load your times to a leaderboard. Considering it is just the one level.

Re: Sonic Generations - Holy shit this looks awesome!

this guy p much sums up my feelings on the franchise:

Has Sega finally learned from their mistakes? Well, to put it this way, the Sonic franchise has rabies. Your beloved childhood pet the Sonic franchise is trying to kill you. A few years ago daddy handed you a shotgun and said, “Billy, I’m leaving it up to you.”

To put it succinctly, you’re a pussy, and you still haven’t taken poor the Sonic franchise out back. And look what it’s done. It tore up your house. It chased after you countless times with those evil blood-hungry eyes. And you look at it with tears in your eyes, and you look down at that shotgun in your hands, and you say, “I’m sorry the Sonic franchise, but it has to happen this way.” You click off the safety. Your finger rests on the trigger. Sweat pouring down your brow, you take aim. Suddenly, daddy comes running forward and says, “Now wait just a minute there, Billy buddy, the doc just came through with a miracle cure.”

You thank the heavens, and you wipe the sweat from your brow, but you can’t put down the gun; not after all the things the Sonic franchise has done. Will that vaccine really be all it takes to clear the pox from your beloved the Sonic franchise? You lean in with cautious excitement and wait.

Pre-ordered the CE. Can't wait.

Me too. I never bother with collectors editions but as an old school sonic fan I just couldn't pass up all those extras.

Re: Sonic Generations - Holy shit this looks awesome!

I stopped playing Platformers when I was 10, partly because franchises like these went down the toilet.

IGN review

http://au.ps3.ign.com/articles/121/1211001p1.html

8.5 Presentation
An awesome interactive hub world, and a story that, while inconsequential, is enjoyable. The Sonics have a great dynamic.

7.5 Graphics
Looks great in motion, but not as nice when everything stops. Framerate issues pop up somewhat regularly.

7.0 Sound
Hit or miss soundtrack, but cool remixes. Improved voice acting (everyone is 70% less annoying). The sound effects are all spot on.

8.5 Gameplay
Two great types of levels, both awesome examples of Sonic at his finest. The boss battles are weak though.

8.0 Lasting Appeal
Relatively short campaign, but a metric f---ton of unlockables, and motivation to replay every level.

8.5
OVERALL
Great

Good stuff, will be the best Sonic for a while.

Re: Sonic Generations - Holy shit this looks awesome!

Have to pick this up when the price drops. Series has been horrible for a long time, although i felt the Sonic Colours was a step in the right direction.

Re: Sonic Generations - Holy shit this looks awesome!

I'm so ****ing angry...I've been living under a rock for the last few months.

I pre ordered the limited edition from JB HI FI a few weeks ago. Today, I was surfing their website to find out there was a collectors edition released but now they are all sold out. Can't find it anywhere, expect on eBay but they are going for $400+.

God damn it, I'm spewing I missed out.
