SonicWall - WTF?

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

I was going to have a look at Susan Boyle on Youtube when up pops the message below.

Anyone else had this happen to them?

Anyone know what it means and how I can overcome it before the start of the footy season?

PS: Before today I had not heard of SonicWall, let alone purchased anything from them. Also, I have not consciously changed any settings on my PC.

This site is blocked by the SonicWALL Content Filter Service.

Is this a personal PC or a work PC you are using Mr R?

SonicWall is used by a lot of businesses to limit their employees visitations to NSFW sites.

It's a 100% personal computer, TFW. Not connected to any business networks.

Somehow I've got to disable the thing before it locks me out of BigFooty:eek:

Sorry I couldn't get a ewetoob link MR.

Thought this from my personal album might suffice.

Could it be something to do with the Government's Internet filter? I know they're talking about blocking parts of YouTube, but yeah, pretty scary if true.

BTW, roobear - North Melbourne and Melbourne Heart. Not a bad combo, that.

And I look forward to posters getting both of us confused in the future thanks to the 'roo' in our username and the avatar. :thumbsu:

Good response, roobear :thumbsu:

Correct. Likewise schools trying to keep kids off Facebook, etc. In theory, it is installed by the network admins, and they are the only ones who can remove it.

Have been doing some searching for you, Mr R. Not only have my investigations taught me a whole lot of things I didn't know about SonicWall, I also learnt a bunch of other cool stuff about Google, too. Like the myriad ways in which you can change the Google front page. (e.g. type in "google gothic", and hit "I'm Feling Lucky".) Or how to use Google to hack into (and take control of) network security cameras, or how to hack into people's online photo albums to add pics of your choice. Hours of entertainment right there. So it turned out to be quite a fruitful little quest.

Okay, there wasn't a lot on the interweb about SonicWall self-loading itself in a virus-like manner, but there were a few dudes who reported a similar thing happening to them. So you're not the only one out there that has copped this. Although sometimes it turns out it was actually a (hidden) add-on of something else that they'd recently installed.

Not knowing its origin/source in this case makes it difficult to know the best way to remove it. But I strongly recommend you use Ad-Aware or some similar, quality spyware removal program to give your pc the once over and see if that can get rid of it.

The good news is that while removing it can be difficult, getting around it is relatively easy. One of the simplest ways is by using a proxy site. Just go to proxy.org, who have a comprehensive list of proxy sites (hidemyass.com, say, is a well known example) which they pick randomly for you when you perform your search. Type the youtube URL in the proxy.org search engine, which will then bring up a new window with the proxy site that they have randomly selected for you. (Keep in mind that proxy sites are being created, or more importantly killed, on a constant basis. So some of the sites that they choose for you have already been shut down. If that happens, just close the new window and search again 'til you get a working proxy site.) Then basically, do the same thing again on the proxy site that you just did on proxy.org. i.e. Type in the youtube URL, hit search, and - bang - you're in.

Tested this a few times myself and it worked fine.

There are other ways to get around it. Ranging from the simple (changing the language settings in Google), to the more complex (stuff that involves changing shit in your pc's registry, etc). Provided you're not blocked from playing the video tutorials, these two pages have some useful info on some of the other methods if you have no luck with the proxy site method I described above.

Hey roobear4eva, when is Aloisi getting named as skipper? today?

Thanks, TOD. You've gone WAY above and beyond. I'll give it a try as soon as I can.

The last time I used proxy.org was when I was doing some polling for the BigFooty all-Australian team.

Check out Id Blaster as well. It's what I always use when surfing the web. Never had a drama since I installed it a year or so ago, it generates a new web address for me every 5 seconds although you can reset the frequency to whatever you want.

Hey roobear4eva, when is Aloisi getting named as skipper? today?

I have no idea, Roos4bear.

As long as he scores more braces like he did on Sunday, I'll be happy for him to play for us.

If we get the player that missed simple shots in previous seasons of the A-League, then no thanks.

But he'd be taking a massive pay cut, so as a non-marquee signing, I think he'd be worth it.

Hope we get Bolton and Colosimo as well - add that with Matt Thompson and hopefully Skoko, (and I suppose Sarkies), our starting 11 looks good.

Problem solved. A friend of mine tried the suggestions and one of them seems to have worked. So thanks everyone.:)

Here is what I was looking up. If you haven't seen it before and you love surprise happy endings it's worth investing the 7 minutes or so.

Didn't you find what is probably my last ever youtube contribution extraordinary?

"Last ever" ? So my new virus worked then ??

Just kidding, Mr R.

Not really my cup of chai, but as the great and wise Alan Thicke once sang:

Well the world don't move to the beat of just one drum
What might be right for you, may not be right for some
A man is born, he's a man of means
Then along came two, they got nothing but their jeans
But they got different strokes
It takes different strokes
It takes different strokes to rule the world

No my cuppa either, TOD, but I like the surprised looks when the woman CAN in fact sing like a bird.
