What is the story with South Adelaide??

they are NEVER around the mark...not before AFL, not now...
(if i remember correctly they won a final or 2 in 1990)

what is the problem down there??

will they ever win a premiership??

not shaw when they moved to noarlunga, but playing there can hardly help. a losing experience (except for the away team) for all involved...

Their last grand final was in 79 when they lost to Port.

Spent big about 4 years ago but still finished around 4th (i think).

Their major problems are generally regarded as being off field (unstable board etc).

They've got a big zone in the southern suburbs of Adelaide and the fleurieu peininsula, if they can use it to their advantage they may be a contender on a regular basis but it will probably be a long term thing. Going for a local, Clay Sampson, as coach, was probably a good thing although he is fairly inexperienced.

Will struggle to make the finals in 2009.

Moving to Noarlunga in 1995 and building a base there was the best thing South could've done - it actually got them an identity and true catchment for the first time in a long time rather than having a home ground that wasn't a home ground at St. Mary's and playing out of Adelaide Oval.

With some half-decent management there should be no reason why they can't become a southern Centrals.

That's the problem though, keep hearing this said about South Adelaide but it never happens!

They last won a flag in 1964. In 1963 they had come bottom. Between 1945 and 1963 they never finished higher than sixth in an eight team competition.

They were competitive in 1965 and 1966. By 1969 they were bottom again.

They made a grand final in 1979. By the mid to late 80s they were bottom again. They were minor premiers in 1991, but went out in straight sets.

They have had some great players, but their culture has been awful since the second World War.

As long ago as 1959 they only survived in the league by the casting vote of the league president. They also nearly folded in 1990.

They are now financial so there existence is no longer threatened, perhaps under Clay Sampson they may be on the right track.

Yeah that's the rub. Reminds me of my lot in the Premiership. All the potential in the world is there but never gets realised due to poor decisions and cock-ups at board level.

Yes they can.

Im hoping that in 2009 it will be a West Adelaide vs Sout Adelaide GF just so one of them gets rewarded!
That would be disastrous for the league. Can you imagine 15,000 people at the Grand Final

exactly...

there would probably be more people there than actual south and west supporters to watch history.

anyway won't happen. south will be lucky to win a gf in 10 years.

They will win a flag soon. Without a doubt. Off field they just need to stay strong then they will do a 'Centrals' and buy themselves a premiership or 10.

I read the info below on the SAFC web site. Anything know much about some of these additions?

South Adelaide announce signings as at 22 December 2008

Monday 22 December, 2008

South Adelaide are pleased to announce the following player signings for the 2009 season:
  • Mark Bradley (Formerly South Adelaide) - Ruck/Forward. The Chief returns to South after several years in Victoria where he played for Casey Scorpions and Noble Park. Versatile he should be able to play ruck or hold down a key position at either end of the ground.
  • Adam Cockshell (Port Power/Norwood) - Centre Half-forward. South Adelaide has recruited Adam with the expressed desire of holding down centre-half forward. An Athletic 195cm, the 22-year old can play back and pinch hit in the ruck, however it is as a forward target the Panthers feel he can make the most impact.
  • Andrew Moritz (Bute/North Adelaide) - Midfield. The former North Adelaide player has spent the past couple of seasons at Bute. Very keen to give it another go at SANFL level the strong bodied 25 year old is sure to be an important player in 2009
  • Jak Kennedy-Hunt (Werribee VFL/Geelong Falcons) - Half Forward/Half Back. A high-marking forward or defender Jak’s last two seasons have been impacted by injury and illness. Still only 20, South have Jak earmarked for a lead-up forward role who is sure to enjoy the wide open spaces of Hickinbotham oval.
  • Nathan Lyons (Williamstown VFL/Western Jets) - Midfield. A pacy midfielder Nathan did the 2008 pre-season with Melbourne but missed out on a rookie spot. At 20 years old he made his debut in the strong Williamstown line-up during the year, where his ball winning ability and defensive pressure were a highlight.
SANFL mini-draft selections:
  • Shaun McKernan (Adelaide Crows/Calder Cannons) - Ruck/Key position. Taken at pick 2 in the SANFL mini-draft the 195cm versatile key position prospect is a real positive for South for 2009. Shaun has the ability to step straight into SANFL and have an immediate impact.
  • Jordan Johns (Port Power/ NSW/ACT Rams) - Midfielder. Taken with the club’s second pick in the SANFL Minidraft the NSW Scholarship listed midfielder played for the Rams in the national championships in 2008 as a bottom-aged player. He won’t be available to South Adelaide until after the national championship in 2009.

Most clubs have got healthy pokie revenue, and have done for a few years now. So why do Centrals continue to dominate? Why did North - who claim to be the richest club in the league - miss the finals last year? Why do West and South consistently fail dismally with strong pokie revenue?

I wonder what the next 'sour grapes' argument will be to discredit the achievements of Centrals.

Good get! Lightning quick, good bit of x-factor, is pretty versatile - can play as a small defender, on a half forward flank or in the midfield, hard at it and has a really good defensive workrate. Strength and skills are improving all the time. A bit stiff not to be in the AFL system really.

Kennedy-Hunt's the other one from here in Victoria, I think he had his appendix out in 2007 and that derailed his footy for a while. Fit and injury free he's dangerous up forward.

Heard they also signed Michael Gugliotta from the NT, 18 yr old who was in the AIS/AFL academy, arguably unlucky not to have been rookie listed but you'd expect he'd go alright at state league level.

I'm still waiting for bloody westies to climb of the bottom. Every year there are plenty of new recruits but its the same old story. This year shane birss and some vfl ball magnet have joined the club.

Who is closer to winning a falg - westies or south.

South has a big area like centrals but don't use to their advantage. Westies once again produce some young afl talent but none of the other youngsters do much as seniors.

Just wondering if there has been any talk about Lee Schmidt over there, Apparently South's recruited him from Corowa in the Ovens & Murray League. I think he was the league's leading goal kicker last season, but can play mid-field also.
