i got done for speeding not long ago, 13 kms over or something. it cost me $215 which is ****in steep for me. but not for others.

if the government want to continue revenue raising under the guise of safety, i think they should deter people equally by making the fine a % of your declared income. so people like me do not have to cop twice, three times the "detterant" as the rich.

a simple .25% of last years declared income would be sufficient, so everyone is penalized equally.

imagine someone on $25000 pa nett, compared to someone on 100,000 pa nett
for exactly the same crime 1 gets punished 2 days pay compared to the other 1 who gets half a days pay. who is deterred more?
at the moment only the lower to middle class are really deterred by a set price fine.

I think it's Finland which does something like this. I remember seeing some rich guy copped a fine of around $250k due to it.

I agree in theory it would be good, though you'd still need a minimum fine - otherwise what if someone is unemployed or the person at home with the kids? Can't have free reign to ignore fines :p
