POSSIBLE MEMO BY ANDREW DEMETRIOU:

"In 1993 the blood rule was introduced (players must be removed from ground when bleeding, also when having blood on their body/playing uniforms) to protect players from the transmission of blood-borne disease. When we introduced the blood rule, we did not recognize spitting in the same light. But having seen little league footballers engage in this unsavory practice has highlighted the need to outlaw spitting by AFL players. Henceforth, and with immediate effect, any player caught spitting will be reported or cited by the MRP for bringing the game into disrepute, unless the player can prove he had swallowed a fly. Our broadcast partners have been asked to pixilate images of players spitting during play."

Yes, this is a joke, but how long before the AFL bans spitting? This morning the issue was a lead story on Fairfax Radio, with a grandmother complaining her grandsons spat while playing kick-to-kick and justified it by saying "that's what AFL players do all the time".

Point the blame at the 1001 new and exciting camera angles, not the players.

There's two things that you will always see in a footy match that will never change.

Players wearing a club jumper, and players spitting on the ground.

Or we have trainers running around like maniacs with spit buckets.

The one that gets me is the player who has just kicked a goal, he knows the cameras are on him, and he spits not once, not twice, but multiple times. Its just a reflex habit, it seems. I could understand if the player has just had a swig of water, but that's not what I'm talking about.

A dam good thing granny didn't see the players in the old days pretending to do up their boots, whilst they had a nervous twinkle in the middle of a huddle, otherwise little johnny would be in deep shite.

Do players, still do it???

Yes still happens

If the first player into the huddle kneels down on one knee , then his team mates close in and huddle around , he's having a nervous piddle.

And what would Bruce McAvaney say if he saw that?

Have any of you blokes condemning spitting even ran a few ks let alone a footy match? Saliva is a by-product of exercise.

So drink some water and swallow it. I've never felt the need to spit out anything at the gym.

This post can be so taken out of context
