Soon i'll be getting one of the new LCD 100 or 200hz bravia tvs which comes with a free blu ray player. But i only have a cheap sansui amplifier. Now i was wondering if it was possible to still run a hdmi cable from the DVD player to the TV but split the audio to go through the sansui?

I just use component for the video then tos link or whatever for the audio. Component video will give you the same quality as HDMI

No it won't

component is not capable of 1080p, much less 1080p/24 which is what he should be outputting. Considering the TV is probably (certainly) capable of 1080p/24 it would be criminal to ignore this option. 1080p/24 on the TV will prevent pull down and lead to a smoother and better picture from the blu-rays. Also the BDPS550 will not upscale DVDs to 1080 over anything but HDMI.

The bonus br is a bdps550 which has 7.1 analogue outs which if your amp is 5.1 will output the lossless codecs downmixed to 5.1. giving you the latest video and audio. double bonus

so hdmi to the tv and analogue connections into the amp.

*DO NOT BUY EXPENSIVE HDMI CABLES THEY OFFER NO BENEFIT OVER $20 CABLES. IF PEOPLE TRY TO TELL YOU OTHERWISE, BELITTLE THEM. LOUDLY.

Yep. "Judder" i think is the term. The picture gets extremely jerky during wide pan shots and it kills your eyes. 1080p/24 and to an lesser extent "Motion flow" is VITAL if you are to enter in the blu-ray world.

It is actually, but it can't be used for blu ray movies due to some sort of licensing agreement. Blu-ray will apparently play in 1080P over HDMI only.

But component is capable of carrying a 1080P signal for other applications, like gaming.

But i'd do exactly as you said, HDMI direct to the tv, and analogue audio to the amp

Ahh thanks for clearing that up.

My understanding is its something to do with copy protection.

Making it harder to convert the digital signal to analogue by making bluray HDMI only, makes piracy more difficult.

But component cables are quite capable of carrying a 1080P signal in any other situation, gaming, media players etc etc

Well after buying the TV i found myself with a couple of hundred left over and have been searching for new receivers. Was wondering do the cheap receivers with HDMI in and out support 1080p video pass through or not? also is it worth saving up for a more expensive receiver so the audio also stays HD aswell?

I have a question slightly related

I have a Sony Bravia and a Sony surround sound/dvd system. I have optical link for audio (whatever it's called) and HDMI for video. The TV comes with link up features you can change the volume of the audio system through the TV remote.

Now the problem is for no reason every now and again the audio changes to the TV speaker and says "TV Speaker Activated, Communication Failure with Audio System" or something like that. It takes a few tries of switch functions on the sound system (i.e off TV/VIDEO to RADIO or CD and back to TV/RADIO) to get it back to audio system and turn off the TV Speaker.

Anyone have any suggestions as to why this would be happening?
