BEFORE his brother Jack was drafted to the AFL, Dylan Grimes was tagged with the nickname "Shadow".
Now, with Jack at Melbourne, Grimes No. 2 is trying to make a name for himself.
But the Northern Knights onballer still harbours ambitions to join Jack at the Demons, the club he has grown up supporting.
"It was great, actually, when Jack got drafted to Melbourne because we didn't have to change who we followed in the AFL," Grimes said.
"You can't control what happens at the end of the year.
"You can only focus on what you do on game day, beating your opponent and then what happens happens after that, I guess."
The 17-year-old is the school captain at Diamond Valley College, a role he said he never thought about taking on until it was suggested by a co-ordinator at school last year.
But he said that still had not made his position in the leadership group at the Knights any easier.
"I was actually a terrible public speaker," Grimes said.
"So getting up in front of your mates at halftime, three-quarter time and giving them a bit of a gee-up is still pretty hard, but I'm starting to enjoy it."
Grimes said new coach Denis Pagan was having an enormous influence on the Knights.
"It's a real honour to learn off one of the best coaches in history," Grimes said.
"Even on the first night when we were all introduced it was evident that things were going to be completely different.
"He's basically turned the Knights inside out and back to front and then changed us into what he wanted, which is good in the sense that we'd come off such a poor season last year, so it was a real fresh start."
Grimes said Pagan had emphasised his players' personal development. "He's said to us that the best coach for individual improvement is ourselves," Grimes said.
"Basically, we know what we have to do to get that improvement out of ourselves, and only we know in ourselves if we're doing all we can to be our best."
