According to Lachie Reid on ten news tonight Peter German will be at Fremantle next year. This is great news IMO, it will be fantastic having two assistants who are close to a senior afl coaching position.

Who are our current zone coaches, Harvey handles the backs, does O'Donnell control the forwards and Broadbridge the midfield? Maybe Malaxos or O'Donnell are moving on, what is Malaxos' current job title at the club?

Great news. I rate German very higly :D . I would say that O'Donnell would be the one to move on.

I don't know who'll be leaving to be honest. Maybe no-one at all - maybe they're just expanding the coaching group. That actually wasn't the angle I was coming from.

How do I put this...ummm... from a source very close to K.O'D, he doesn't expect to be leaving, has never planned to go anywhere, prefers to stay in Perth, but realises his future with Freo is tied in with CC's. If he is going to be moved on, it will come as a most unwelcome and unpleasant surprise to him and his family.

O'Donnell and Broadbridge re-signed for 1 year each a week ago.

German will be a real acquisition to you blokes if you get him. Renowned for his infamous sprays, the players at Subi have an enormous respect for him and have definately been playing for their coach. Will add toughness to your overall unit and if anybody steps out of line and Germo finds out, watch out! He has broken a few lesser players in his time at Subi and his amazing 83% win record speaks for itself.

I'm sure he would be a welcome addition to Freo's coaching staff JiG, and an 83% win-loss record is pretty astounding... but at Subi he had the players at his fingertips to achieve this - what was his winning percentage down at Peel, I wonder? ;)

Yep I still have some question marks over German's coaching ability, but he may be pretty adept as an assistant.

He did b all at Peel and has he really got the best out of his group of players at Subi ?. Has he under achieved at Subi with the players available ?.

They beat the doggies easily in the wafl gf (even with Schoey playing). They must be doing something right up there at Subi.

Does the Subi team have more talent than their rivals though? There are a lot more guys at claremont and south Freo with afl experience than Subi, infact the tigers and bulldogs could almost form a starting 18 of current/former afl players.

Crowley, Mundy and Nicoski all spent their early years under German, and all 3 look to have big futures at afl level.

I see where you're coming from but knowing a lot of the Subi boys, who share some amazing stories about some of the infamous sprays, they all have a great respect for him and are quite disappointed to see him leaving.

To leave after four years with two premierships and four minor premierships is a fairly decent record regardless of the player group, which i'd rate at times equal to that of Claremont and South Freo.

I recently interviewed Schoey who had nothing but good things to say about him, and he's played under a few good coaches. German has always seemed pretty switched on tactically to, Ashley Prescott has previously said he is the hardest coach to work out when playing.

I think if nothing else Germo will give Freo even more mongrel to add on to what Mark Harvey brought across with him. A good pick up :thumbsu:

Agreed there, just think that sometimes in all the glory, his days at Peel are forgotten ( could anyone have done better ?).

Overall a good inclusion, Stav might be really under the pump.

Dockers target German

A plan to expand Fremantle’s coaching department could pave the way for Subiaco premiership coach Peter German to return to AFL ranks with the Dockers.

Dockers CEO Cameron Schwab will put a proposal to the club’s board next week, asking for an increase in football department spending to swell the coaching ranks and restructure the coaching panel to make greater use of technology.

German is expected to be the frontrunner for any new position.

He was “sounded out” by Dockers coach Chris Connolly earlier this week. He has also attracted interest from Geelong.

German was coy on all approaches from AFL clubs when asked by The West Australian.

“We have spoken and that is about as far as it has gone so far,” he said of his contact with Fremantle.

“It is a matter of getting a position approved and then Fremantle will take things from there.”

He was not prepared to discuss any approach from Geelong.

Cats CEO Brian Cook confirmed the club had spoken to him but it is believed German’s preferred option is to go to Fremantle if a position is available.

Schwab said the idea of employing an extra coach had come out of Fremantle’s end of season review which was conducted about a week after the 2006 grand final.

“We are toying with the possibility of having more resources in the coaching area,” he said.

“I have got to take it to the board for a full going over but we thought we would touch base with candidates we were interested in. Peter would be well considered for any role at the club.”

German, 41, played 185 games for North Melbourne between 1984 and 1994 and began his coaching career at Burnie in Tasmania in 1995.

He worked as an assistant coach under Ken Judge at both Hawthorn and West Coast, starting his WAFL coaching career at Peel before moving to Subiaco where he has built a remarkable 82 per cent win ratio over four seasons, winning two of the last three premierships.

Schwab said the chance to incorporate higher technologies into coaching and list management was a key plank of the proposal to increase the club’s coaching panel.

“It is probably one area that we need to catch up in,” he said. “We have only just been keeping pace so far and it is an area we would like to get ahead in.”

• Brisbane have announced the appointment of former Hawthorn premiership player Paul Hudson as an assistant coach.

Hudson played a total of 245 AFL games with Hawthorn, the Western Bulldogs and Richmond, kicking 479 goals, and was an All-Australian in 1998.

• Sydney star Tadhg Kennelly has been named vice-captain for Ireland’s upcoming International Rules series on home soil against Australia.

Kieran McGeeney, 35, will captain the team after being overlooked for the past two series. The first Test is on Saturday week.

• Essendon have de-listed Aaron Henneman, Joel Reynolds and Tristan Cartledge.
