Spriggs and Ling the beep quinella

THIRTY-SEVEN of Geelong's finest faced football's modern form of torture: the beep test.

Fifteen minutes on, just two were left: David Spriggs and Cameron Ling; the other 35 in varying stages of distress at Runaway Bay Sports Centre.

No one in the Geelong party was the slightest bit surprised. The Spriggs-Ling quinella was the fancied combination before they jumped.

Sprinter Spriggs; stayer Ling. Up and back, up and back; more than 160 repetitions of a measured 20m course to relentless commands coming from a compact disc via speakers.

The field set off at 8.5km/h, with the tempo increasing by 0.5km/h at each new level.

The head-to-head evolved when David Wojcinski withdrew at 15.3.

While Spriggs always looked comfortable, Ling's ungainly style is deceptive. His teammates knew the big engine would keep turning.

Finally, Ling conceded at 16.1. Spriggs ploughed on, quitting at 16.8 to the applause of his teammates.

Conditioning coach Loris Bertolacci said later Spriggs could have kept going.

"His feet were burning," he said.

The group results ranged from Spriggs' 16.8 down to 11.5.

Former Footscray midfielder Jose Romero holds what Bertolacci understands to be the best beep test in football at 17.5.

"My gut feel is Spriggsy would have creamed it today except for his feet," he said.

"An elite distance runner will get up to level 20, but Spriggsy's carrying a fair bit of mass, which they don't have to worry about.

"He bench presses 120kg; he's outstanding in terms of an overall package.

"He's a former junior 1500m champion and he's got a good turn of speed; he's quite an exceptional package," Bertolacci said.

Yet, it was Ling who again amazed his club. "In a way, his was the best performance," Bertolacci said. "Cameron's carrying 94kg around; Spriggsy's about 75."

Draftee Kane Tenace recorded the best time in the 20m test with 2.8sec.

Will Slade has osteitis pubis and is confined to light duties.

Good to see young Tenace performing well. All bodes well for a promising season ahead.

Good to see Spriggs still reigning supreme in the beep test.

Makes you realise how elite these players are, for a fit person like myself, my best is 11:4.
