Bower, Russell, Jackson & Bryan :thumbsu: :thumbsu:

Davies & Teague :thumbsd:

Hopefully the top 4 get a decent run. Very exciting, talented and young squad.

Changes from last week.

Carrazzo and Deluca dropped from the final 24 who played Sat.
Wiggins and Sporn dropped from the 28 man initial squad.

4 changes overall.

Deluca dropped for Bryan.
Carrazzo for Jackson.
Wiggins for Bower.
Sporn for Russell.

Looks better but would not have dropped Carrazzo. Add him and take out Prenda and that looks fine.

Notable absentees: Livo and Bannister.

Have to wait and see on the final cut but Bower and Russell were not even in the 28 man squad so the fact they have been named in the next one is promising as I believe JR deserved a chance.

I think both are injured.

I know Sporn was but not sure about the Wiggler.

I am going to training tomorrow morning and will have a look myself if I can get back to Melbourne tonight.

Are they confirmed, if so I’m very happy with the changes. Really like the inclusion of Russell – just can’t believe you’d select Wiggins or Sporn ahead of that guy. Russell is similar to Walker, in that he has height (6’3”) and blistering speed. In fact, I think Russell is one of the few out there with the ability to run down a Judd or Delidio. Russell doesn’t seem to have Walker’s leap, but has better kicking skills at this stage. A centre line containing Walker-Murphy-Russell, is our future. Also like the inclusion of Ryan Jackson – should just promote this guy now – another tall midfielder. Important to start focussing on player like these. Also like Bower’s inclusion. Hartlett and Bower have height and talent, and could be our long term solution down back. Impressed with Hartlett last week- has good composure under pressure, and did well on N Ablett. Obviously need some experience, but there’s only one way to get it. Also consider need to consider Flint at some stage – pushing 6’3”-4”, and a natural mean defender. Lots to work with this year. :)

What's Parrot doing on this board? :)

As for DIG's comment, it's OK to flirt with your set up but I don't see the wisdom in dropping Carrazzo when he is our best 22. Scotland should play reserves for the rest of the year and picking Davies when he still has a suspension to serve is a mystery.

Maybe Davies is picked to see how much he wants it.
It's a bloody practise game, so if you don't give players a chance now to perform, when are you?
Seriously from no on in, I couldn't give a rats bra zoo who Pagan plays until round1.
I hope Pagan keeps rotating players and rests Kouta, French, Lappin and Stevens even.

How bloody good is it to have a full list?!

Players that are out that have been in the side in recent seasons... its such a positive to have everyone fighting for that game.

I agree with some above, shouldn't have dropped Carazzoo. Would prefer Prendergast to get the flick, but obviously he does everything right on the track and will get a game.

You sound remarkable similar to another Carlton poster. Talking about a players height and including Flint, Jackson,Bower and Hartlett. You missed Bryan though.

I wonder. :p

Getting dropped for a practice match means diddlysquat. Who said we're trying to field our ultimate lineup this week? Lets just have a good look at our list in action, get some system going in the midfield, try some different setups up forward....and hopefully we win as well.

It is a good indication of who will play round 1. Denis is not one to play a lot of kids. So if he does play someone it is not just to "give everyone a go" it is not his style. He prefers to make young players earn there spot.
I would like to see JR and Bower play. Give Edwards a go some other time as well.

I don't know if I really like the idea behind dropping Carrots. Fair enough if Denis wants to give everyone a run, but it could come at a hefty cost. ATM, we should be concentrating heavily on building a settled backline. Having Hartlett in there one week, and Bower the next (for example), I don't think it's gonna get us anywhere.

We all know what we saw in last week's NAB cup clash. A talented squad, but one that still lacks direction. I want to see Denis address those issues sooner rather than later. Otherwise we'll probably struggle to compete most weeks.

Maybe in the premiership season, but this is the pre-season, not even the NAB cup, so it's not even "dancing with your sister" as Pagan himself said. So I'm not sure I understand what you mean - what better time is there for youngsters to earn their spot than now?

Having said that, agree our round 1 lineup won't change radically from last week - We've got at least 15 players who are shoo-ins already for round 1, injuries aside. A handful of others are probables and the last few spots are up for grabs - so lets have a look at our list now so we know what we've got, and not run our best players into the ground at this early stage, it's such a long season. Remember our brilliant pre-season last year culminated in 11 straight losses midyear.

I just want to see prudent player management at this early stage, but I'm not saying juggle players around everywhere, but most guys given a run at some point so the coaches can see them against AFL standard opponents.

On Davies, does anyone know if he's ineligible for both AFL and VFL - VFL reserves too? If he can't play any grade, maybe that's why we're giving him a run now, before his lay-off?

My point if that Denis is not one to experiment or play a whole bunch of kids. He plays his best team and plays them where he feels they are best suited. He does that in the AFL, NAB and practice games. Intra club and so on.
When he lined up the possibles versus the probables he basically took 2 players out of his best team and added them to the possibles and that was his level of experimentation.
If a player is not in his squad and is not injured then that means he thinks they are not good enough or not ready.

Other coaches will play everyone of the kids but not Denis. Carrazzo is either injured or did not follow coaching instructions in the game. Livo is not deemed good enough at this stage and so on with the others who have not been named so far in any squad..
The fact Bower/Russell get named in the initial squad means they are thereabouts at this stage which is encouraging.

Denis is conservative and he is 1 coach who you can read a lot into his selections. Yes even now in practice games.

Players injured are
Saddington knee, Longmuir OP, Deluca calf at training, Wiggins will be back next week, Sporn 3 weeks away soft tissue injury. Raso g/fever, Carrazzo needs a foot replacement then may be able to hit a target!

Didn't even notice Livo wasn't picked and obviously it's not a good sign with Saddington and Prendergast ahead in the pecking order. You'd have thought we'd have brought him straight in after the bath Thornton copped on Saturday.

Why pick Davies? :thumbsd:

For Livo to not make the squad 2 times now is a worry.

Seems Beedee has all the scoops. Maybe he can explain how Houlihan put back on his 8kgs that he lost with a mystery illness? :p

I will not be around until Monday. I should get to training tomorrow and then be away for a few days outside Melbourne and back online early next week.

Have a good weekend everyone. :thumbsu:

Interseting IF TRUE about DeLuca. Hard to take this guy seriously though after that bs about Houla, who I believe has in fact put on 2 kg.:thumbsd:

Are you missing Sat's game mojo?
