Collingwood's 14-year relationship with key sponsor Emirates is at a crossroads, after the Magpies more than tripled the asking price to extend the airline's uniform deal with the club.

Emirates pays $1 million a year to be a ''premier partner'' of the Magpies - along with Westpac, CGU and Star Athletic - but the deal ends after the 2014 season.

Club president Eddie McGuire and operations manager David Emerson flew to Dubai earlier this year and met key executives at the airline, including Boutros Boutros, the senior vice-president of corporate communications.

McGuire presented a range of sponsorship options, all of which included increased benefits for Emirates, but the airline has baulked at the $3.5-million asking price.

Will be very disappointed if this partnership comes to an end. Emirates and Collingwood have helped each other in many ways over the years and I think from a Collingwood point of view, to be associated with a brand of that stature worldwide is huge.

No more Kogan, Holden & Star Athletic, we want more big brands for the biggest brand in Australia. Eddie you know the sponsorship isn't worth that much, just be logical.

If you shoot for the stars and only hit the moon.. well you still hit the moon.. he may let them talk him down the the figure he really wants and they'll think they got a bargain :p

McDonalds -> Subway
Lexus -> Holden
Adidas -> Star Athletic
Emirates -> ....JetStar?

Please Collingwood, don't let go of the last bit of decent sponsors we have left!

If Emirates don't want to play ball then we may have to go with Virgin.

Interesting. Ending up with a Virgin after your more expereinced existing partner balks at your increasingly unreasonable demands...

Highly doubt we'll find another sponsor willing to give us 1.5 that emirates give us now, let alone one with world wide exposure with a brand who's reputation is increasing by the day. Would not be stupid to suggest within 5-10 years it could be the biggest airline in the world. It's just the way they operate business over there, nothing but the best is acceptable for their businesses.

Sounds like they would do 2 million based on the article. Just do 2 mil and be done with it Edward.

Yeah, I'm sure we are just winging it.

The guernsey sponsor kind of defines the club era.

We've had the Yakka era ... they were hard ( :oops: ) with all those losing Grand Finals' appearances.

We've had the Spicers era :thumbsu:

We've had the Emirates era :thumbsu:

It wouldn't be a bad idea to put a line under this era and start a new beginning, especially with all the changes we've had in the football department.

Emirates have been a fantastic sponsor for us. What's made them particularly fitting is the growth of their brand within Australia has matched our own.

I'm surprised that there would be such a huge gap between the parties. Brand valuation is a reasonably mature science these days. Wouldn't have thought $3.5 mill is huge money given the exposure. How much do Emirates pay for The Melbourne Cup sponsorship? I'd be surprised if they get better value out of that.

But, gotta admit, Emirates would know a thing or two about shirt sponsorships. Collingwood would give them nothing like the global exposure they would get with Arsenal or AC Milan.

I'd imagine Perty and Co have gone to a bit of trouble to get our guernsey sponsorship valued properly. If Emirates don't want to pay the money then somebody else out there will.

A final thing - an article like this one only gets into the media if somebody has backgrounded them. That wouldn't have been Emirates, that's likely to have been us. Not classy. Unnecessary bully boy tactics that'll lead to failure if you ask me :thumbsdown:

We also cost them nothing like the massive quantities of cash they give to those sides... Within Australia, we are the most visible sporting club, so if they want to build their brand here, we're the prestige option.

Who cares as long as they pay the money.

10 years ago Emirates was not a premium brand, neither was Lexus really. Things change. Who's to say a new sponsor won't have the same transformation over time.
