The Tigers are off the charts at the moment. I've never seen numbers like this.

It's still early days, but every computer model around currently slots the Tigers in for the minor premiership with a high degree of confidence, finishing 2-4 games clear. They're basically saying it will take a significant form change to knock us out from here.

The slightly unsettling thing is that history is littered with GF losers who dominated the home & away season, e.g. Cats 2008, St Kilda 2009, Collingwood 2011, Hawks 2012.

But it's a great time to be a Tiger supporter.

There are also a number of instances where teams have dominated a season and won the flag

Hawks 2013
Pies 2010
Cats 2007
Lions 2001
Essendon 2000
Carlton 1995
Hawks 1988/1989 (less games played)

how do we compare with those sides ala port in early 2000's that played unaccountable fast flowing footy that got found out in the finals?

We're a long way ahead of them. You can have a look at past years on the site, e.g. here is 2002.

Realistically, though, computer models often can't predict a whole lot about finals. They're strongest during the home & away season, where humans struggle to keep track of all the data from so many games. In finals, I reckon sensible people who pay attention can outperform model tips. I.e. go with what your eyes tell you.

As much as we have been smashing everyone and what the various models forecast - I can’t believe it’s round 7 and we are $4 favourites to go back to back.

Just on this point (kind of) I was listening to the Tigers Podcast a few weeks back, and they came up with some ridiculous stat which said that in each year that we have beaten Carlton by 26 points during the home and away season we have played in the GF.

So I guess after round 1, we can sit back and relax until at least GF Day!

Flag Pole and the Squiggle are correct again!

1919 R9: Rich 95 def Carl 69 (lost GF to Collingwood)
1928 R13: Rich 105 def Carl 79 (lost GF to Collingwood)
1973 R6: Rich 128 def Carl 102 (won GF over Carlton)
2017 R14: Rich 84 def Carl 58 (won GF over Adelaide)
2018 R1: Rich 121 def Carl 95 (??)

clutching at straws here.... anything in the stats to differentiate us from the high achieving losers?
id prefer if we were closer to hawks 2014 than st kilda

There's no general rule... each high-achieving GF loser has their own story, and so do the teams that went on to win it (eg Geelong 2007, Collingwood 2010).

Long way to go, though. The current gap will close in the future, since it's at a historic high, and then we won't be out on our own any more. Hopefully it's because a couple of other teams improve and not because we fall away! If we make it to the Grand Final, the outcome will depend on factors we can't predict... it comes down to the day.
