Admittedly haven't, but isn't that just one side of the story? Our management of the club was stuffed at the time but he had a year to run on his contract.

Which he said he was happy to see out.

The board said they didnt want him coming out of contract but never sat down with him to talk over the details.

Freo made the Godfather offer and Ross was tired of getting mucked around so he told the Saints board to shove it and exercised a 3 month notice of resignation that was part of his deal with us.

Hope the club takes note of all those who won’t renew their memberships solely because of Ross Lyon and puts them firmly at the end of the line for Grand Finals tickets.
I hope the whingers jump off and others jump on and exhaust the Social Club GF ticket allocation

The 6-6-6 impacts 15 seconds of the game.

He will want half forwards pushing right up to lock the ball in. He will set up 2 midfield sweepers if “Gawn is feeding Oliver and they are kicking goals every other minute” as someone put it the other day or expect Marshall to nullify the tap and bring the ball to ground.

The stand rule. Different. That impacts the game for both sides irrespective of talent.

Do the wingman need to stand on the wing side of the square?

I could see Ross starting them on the back corners to stop the 'chaos' ball flying out of the stoppage.

One person I would believe is Roo and here is his take.

Nick is an unabashed supporter of Ross (as the vast majority of his past players are) and i cant imagine the board sat down with the players and gave them the blow by blow of how and why it happened so im not sold his is an accurate reflection of the entire scenario. Nick also spoke about the end of his career on the Dylan Buckley pod and he certainly wasnt treated with the respect that we all would assume he got (and deserved) at the end of his playing days so i dont imagine hes a huge fan of the administration part of the footy club anyway. For clarity here i love Nick, hes a saints man through and through and he has only ever wanted the best for this club in spite of all of this (and if you havent listened to his pod with Dyl and Friends i recommend it, hes a champion).

The board and admin totally botched the Ross deal at the time, it was the complete opposite of Ratts in that Ratts got an extension ahead of deserving it and Ross didnt get one until way too late in spite of absolutely earning one BUT Ross wasnt transparent in his dealings, he cut his management, knifed Mark Harvey and ultimately blindsided the Saints. Hes entitled to do all of that especially given how he was treated but hes not the perfect victim.

Both sides carry some blame, id argue we carry much much more of it but Ross is no angel and i cant blame people for having some baggage about it.

Ultimately that all amounts to nothing now, its been 10 years and most of the people are new. Ross has moved on so we all probably should.

We all put a bit of mayo on our opinions. I am all in on Ross but I can see the reasons why some are a bit concerned about the appointment. Everything's a gamble but this is a sort of rehashed gamble. He's not the only path we could take and some are going to need time to come to terms with it.

If it stuffs up we'll all be piling on and see all the old issues as pointers that we should have recognised. If he takes us back up the ladder we'll all put it down to his genius instead of a good injury run and easier draw. Footy opinions are very black and white.

Like any coaching appointment hiring Ross is a risk but it's a calculated risk based on what Lyon has achieved previously coaching both us and Freo.

It could end up being the best thing that has happened to us since Ross last coached us with him taking us back to playing finals consistently and potentially winning us a flag or it could end up being a disaster but on his past achievements the former is more likely than the latter so it's a risk worth taking and one I'm willing to take like a lot of other Saints supporters here.

Either way hiring Ross as our coach is better than the alternative of sticking with Ratten for two more years where we were likely to remain irrelevant with more mediocre mid table results.

I have no idea what Ross will do to nullify the 6-6-6 and stoppage dominance but the Dogs couldnt do it with Melbourne in the GF and the Swans couldnt do it with Geelong in the GF so i think it will take alot more nuance and consideration than you are flagging, ultimately i kind of think a truly dominant team in the middle there might not be anything coaches can do but pretending its a simple fix when two extremely good midfields (one renowned for its defensive ability no less) couldnt negate its impact im not sure it as simple as youre implying here.

From what I understand, Ross and his management asked the St Kilda hierarchy for clarity many times and they weren't forthcoming or prepared to put anything on the table other than a below standard one year deal.

I'd put this right in the St Kilda admin corner, you are talking the guys who sent us to Seaford. To say he knifed Mark Harvey is complete LOL.

99.9% of us would do the exact same thing if we were in his shoes.

I hope Ross can get us playing an attractive potent game. But his reappointment only pays off if he takes us all the way to September glory. Any other result and this will be a monumental waste of time.
I can’t agree with this.
Obviously, winning a flag has to be the goal. But if he leaves in three/four years having put a culture of excellence and high standards and even higher expectations into what is, right now, a “meh” club, then that will be a successful tenure to me, which hopefully will then be carried on by the next coach.

Much like Paul Roos did at the Demons.

The exit clause that the club tried to hide is telling IMO.

Worth the read.

If he knifed Harvey then he knifed Ratten. He replaced a coach whom had been sacked. He didn't sack them.

How can you argue only presenting Ross with a contract once he tells you he is leaving?
I don't understand what you mean. He had a year to rub didn't he? He was contracted to the end of 2013?

Well read it. It’s eye opening and pretty believable knowing who we had running the show at the time.

Right.
Seeing as this appointment seems 99.9% done, what are we thinking…3, 4, 5 years?
Im going with 4, but I’m a bit conservative. If the club is totally serious, they’d be doing 5,
especially considering the payout wouldn’t kill us…(been there, done that 😝)

I believe it's a 4 year deal locked in.

Presumably with options/triggers for extension based on certain metrics in years 1-3.

He had a year to go. But there was serious interest from Melbourne that he knew about.

The club/Nettlefold weren’t interested in talking about a new deal for a coach who has taken us to back to back grannies.

Freo kept pushing and pushing. Eventually Ross said yes - then the following morning his agent had a new deal from us after Ross had said he was leaving the night before.
