Well, as it's high contact, it's hard to not pay the free kick. It's not the umpires fault, they need to pay the free for high contact. Either change the rules so it's not a free (too hard imo) or as an industry call the players out on it. Make it a negative thing, not like it is now where commentators speak so highly of the technique.

A high tackle is usually made with one arm - A tackle which has one arm on the waist and the other arm slips high is not a high tackle in my opinion.

Unfortunately in the opinion of the AFL laws, it's a high tackle.

"Oooooohhhh he's so good in the tackle, isn't he Den?"
Have actually heard Gerard Healy when watching a replay of a free say something along the lines of "and he's managed to draw the free kick. Well done." Pretty sure it was a Shuey one though.

I'll admit those one's are there and while Thomas is a piece of shit for doing it, it's a valid tactic because there's a fair chance you'll get a free as that's the rule. I certainly wouldn't want to be known for it though. For Thomas in particular though, the staging that shits me is that almost every time (and I say almost because it can't literally be every time surely?) he's involved in a contest his immediate reaction is to see if he can get a free for something, not to pass it or get away, to draw a free any way possible. Whether it's a duck, a dive, feigned contact, you name it. He'll try and get one. It's a shame because I'm not one eyed enough to not recognise the guy has skills but he'll always be remembered as a diving piece of shit to me and many others because of that stuff. I really think the AFL should make an example of him. They have, and will continue to have I'm sure, a plethora of opportunities to do so because that's his game.

AFL laws are always open to interpretation - Or otherwise there would be 150 to 200 frees per game.

High contact isn't an interpretation. High contact is high contact. It's one of the most black and white rules in the game.

There would 200 frees per game if technical interpretations were always paid - That's a fact.

Well I'd have thought ducking into a tackle is about the very definition of 'drawing' high contact and they've made a ruling on that. So it isn't impossible that an action like Thomas' last week could one day be considered effectively 'ducking', as the action is virtually identical. When you look at it, the only difference is his head being tilted right back to expose the neck as opposed to his chin tucked into is neck like a normal duck.

I think the umpires were acutely aware last night of his staging. In the goal square he dropped to his knees to play for an in the back call and got quite annoyed when it wasn't paid.

At least we can look forward to the launch of the SFF (Staging For Frees)competition next week

In the red corner weighing I with his AOTY and a healthy ego is Adam Goodes; and in the blue corner weighing in with a mountain of AFL subsidies is Lindsay Thomas.

Adam is in good form with his attempted drive by performance against Richmond where he felt the no contact but still fell to the ground like he had been shot.

Lindsay has displayed more variation to his diving routine in the last two rounds than Matthew Mitcham when he won gold in Beijing.

Should be a fascinating battle
