Yeah I get all of that, but it seems rather different to proclaiming 'finding your voice and your audience is really what being a good comedian is all about'.
It seems to me that that claim may be true of artists in general, but only insofar as it is broad and rhetorical way of saying 'if people are consuming your produce then you are good'.
Which is a fair enough opinion to hold. Personally though I see comedy as a medium through which to effect change. Laughter allows discourse on topics and concepts which are usually either avoided or even shunned altogether.
A man (and it usually is men) who has insights to offer into the human condition and the world around us, and can share those insights through comedy, can be a powerful force for good imo.
But then I suppose we are getting into a semantic debate over what constitutes 'good'. Is the generic comedian who makes x people laugh by recounting trivial stories more 'good' than philosopher comedian who makes x/10 people laugh and see things differently?

IMO a good comedian is anybody who effectively taps into truths in the lives of his audience to elicit humour. Whether that's observations on the nature of the human condition, or the idiosyncrasies of pop tarts, I don't think it matters.
But then I have a similar results-based attitude to most areas of the arts. If you can use prose, or poetry, or sculpture, or music to successfully connect with a group of people and elicit interest or emotion then IMO you're a good artist. Doesn't matter if it's not popular, or deep, or critically acclaimed or whatever.

As I said, I understand that for some people it is simply a matter of 'well he makes people laugh so he is a good comedian'. That perspective seems just as logical as my own so I'm not here to argue against it.

I don't understand how unfamous Jim Jefferies is in Australia. I mean he just sold out Carnegie Hall... he's got his own tv show in the states into its 3rd season ...and his style is very ozzie...yet he's pretty much unknown over here in his own country. It's a bit of a bloody mystery.
He built his career in the UK and got his break in the US. It doesn't surprise me that he's fairly unknown here.
